The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are expanding their operations into space to prepare for future military challenges, according to Brigadier General Yael Grosman, the IDF’s Chief of Technology and Digital Affairs. During an exclusive interview, she emphasized the urgency for the IDF to adapt its strategic framework as warfare increasingly shifts to the cosmos.
The Battlefield of Space
Grosman highlighted the vital role space will play in the future of warfare, stating, “We are on the brink of a data revolution.” This shift necessitates that the IDF adopt new methodologies to integrate data and capabilities across various domains. The military cannot rely on outdated strategies focused solely on past conflicts, she noted, emphasizing the need for a modernized and efficient operational paradigm.
Israel recognizes that it cannot remain competitive on emergent battlefields without a comprehensive approach to utilizing space. This includes effectively gathering and analyzing vast amounts of data across different sectors. Building upon the foundation laid by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir’s five-year plan introduced in January, Grosman stated, “The focus on space is now officially part of our military doctrine.” Following Zamir’s directive, significant resources are being allocated to enhance Israel’s capabilities in space.
Technological Advancements and Data Utilization
The IDF has made remarkable strides in satellite technologies over the last four decades, particularly in communication and surveillance. The Defense Ministry reported that substantial intelligence was gathered during military operations targeting Iran, with over 12,000 photographs taken within a mere 12-day span. These advancements in satellite communications have enabled IDF forces to effectively operate with enhanced data capabilities, even from considerable distances away from Israel’s borders.
Looking forward, Grosman noted the need for the next generation of satellites to carry multiple payloads, allowing for even larger data transfers and a broader range of operational tasks. This approach is especially critical amid growing challenges posed by adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran, who are also developing methods to disrupt satellite operations. Grosman stated, “We are collaborating with powerful allies within the Defense Ministry to tackle these threats proactively.”

The IDF is reorganizing its Communications Command and Cyber Defense Directorate to better leverage artificial intelligence in military operations. Grosman pointed out that a newly established AI-focused brigade will spearhead efforts to modernize the IDF’s technological framework, fostering a data-centric approach to combat scenarios. By evolving in tandem with advancements in cyber and quantum computing, the IDF aims to remain at the forefront of military innovation.
Moreover, the IDF is prioritizing proactive cybersecurity measures. The Communications Command is focused on extending its defensive perimeter beyond Israel’s borders to anticipate cyber threats before they materialize. Grosman emphasized the need for enhanced situational awareness outside the digital perimeter, allowing the IDF to implement offensive strategies against potential cyber adversaries.
