Türkiye and Iraq are poised to finalize a one-year agreement shortly, ensuring the continuation of the crude oil pipeline linking the two nations. This announcement was made on Thursday by Alparslan Bayraktar, Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
The Importance of the Iraq-Türkiye Crude Oil Pipeline
The existing agreement that governs oil exports through the Iraq-Türkiye Crude Oil Pipeline is set to expire on July 27. Bayraktar noted that the new agreement is in its final stages and aims for a signing within the next few days. This pipeline serves a crucial role in facilitating oil transport from Iraq to Türkiye’s Ceyhan port on the Eastern Mediterranean coast. Its significance is heightened due to the economic interdependence both countries share in the energy sector.
The pipeline had faced outages for two and a half years due to a ruling from an arbitration court, which mandated Türkiye to pay $1.5 billion related to unauthorized exports from Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government between 2014 and 2018. In a twist of events, Türkiye stated that the International Chamber of Commerce had upheld many of its claims, enabling oil flows to resume late last year.

During his recent visit to Baghdad, Bayraktar described his meeting with Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair as productive. Bayraktar emphasized the importance of leveraging existing infrastructure while developing new connections.
