Norsk Hydro Exceeds Q2 Profit Expectations Amidst Price Surge, Mitigating Qatar Impact

Norwegian aluminium manufacturer Norsk Hydro recently announced that its quarterly core profits surpassed market expectations, driven by soaring aluminium prices and improved recycling margins. This positive performance comes despite lower energy output and negative currency impacts.

Strong Performance Amid Supply Disruptions

Norsk Hydro reaped the benefits of heightened aluminium prices, particularly due to supply restrictions in the Middle East, during the second quarter. However, output from its Qatalum joint venture was compromised, limiting the overall potential gains. The firm’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) climbed by 15% from the previous year, reaching 8.92 billion Norwegian crowns (approximately $927 million) between April and June. Analysts had projected an average of 8.22 billion crowns.

The surge in earnings was predominantly driven by Hydro’s Aluminium Metal sector, where the adjusted EBITDA more than doubled to 6.42 billion crowns. This growth was largely attributed to increased metal prices and reduced alumina costs, successfully offsetting an 8% decline in sales volumes, as well as rising energy and carbon expenses and a stronger Norwegian crown.

Challenges from Qatalum Joint Venture

Despite the overall positive results, the situation at Qatalum presented challenges. The smelter operated at approximately 60% of its capacity due to ongoing regional crises in the Middle East. Consequently, Hydro’s share of adjusted EBITDA from Qatalum fell sharply to 316 million crowns compared to 922 million crowns the previous year. During this quarter, Hydro ceased purchasing metal from Qatalum as its marketing agreement with the venture expired. The company is now in discussions with its partner regarding future strategies for marketing and selling Qatalum’s aluminium products.

Rising Aluminium Prices and Recycling Margins

Aluminium prices hit a four-year peak in June, fueled by intensified regional supply risks. This surge also elevated physical premiums in both Europe and North America, benefiting Hydro substantially. Furthermore, the disruptions in the market led to improved margins for recycled aluminium, which bolstered earnings from the company’s recycling operations to over 900 million crowns. This increase occurred despite minimal growth in underlying demand for aluminium.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that primary aluminium consumption outside of China has declined compared to prior years. In addition to this, Hydro’s Energy division saw its earnings drop by more than half due to a decrease in hydropower production and unfavorable regional price disparities.

Outlook for Norsk Hydro

Looking ahead, Norsk Hydro faces both challenges and opportunities. The company must navigate the complexities of its Qatalum operations while capitalizing on robust aluminium market conditions. Continued discussions with partners to optimize Qatalum’s market strategy will be crucial to ensure future profitability. Moreover, with global trends pointing towards a heightened demand for recycled materials, Hydro’s investments in this area could yield significant returns. Overall, Norsk Hydro appears well-positioned to leverage the current market dynamics, provided it effectively manages the operational hurdles ahead.
