Egypt’s Sports Minister inaugurates the “Cairo Marathon”

The “Cairo: Cradle of Civilization” marathon, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, recently took place in Cairo, attracting a remarkable turnout of around 7,000 participants. This event, under the banner of “Egyptians’ Fitness,” forms part of the wider National Physical Fitness Initiative, designed to enhance community health and fitness levels. With prominent figures like Gohar Nabil, the Minister of Youth and Sports, and Dr. Ibrahim Saber Khalil, the Governor of Cairo, in attendance, the marathon marked a significant engagement in promoting athletics and well-being among the citizens.

Route of the Marathon: A Blend of Sports and Culture

The marathon kicked off from the Al-Asher Bridge ramp and traversed through historic locations, including the Fustat Pottery Village and Fustat Hills. The course was meticulously designed to not only challenge participants physically but also enlighten them about Cairo’s rich cultural lineage. The marathon concluded at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), providing a perfect backdrop for the celebration of both athletic achievement and the city’s heritage.

A Celebration of Community and Participation

Concluding the event was a spirited award ceremony that recognized the top finishers amidst vibrant community involvement. This inclusive atmosphere highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to promote sports as a lifestyle choice, fostering an active and engaged society. Gohar Nabil articulated the importance of such events, stating that they align perfectly with the mission to encourage athletic habits among all demographic segments. He emphasized the ongoing expansion of the “Egyptians’ Fitness” initiative throughout various governorates to broaden public participation in sports.

Promoting Cultural and Tourist Destinations

The marathon route, which connected the Fustat area to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, exemplifies the Ministry’s dual commitment to athletics and cultural tourism. Nabil pointed out that the event serves a greater purpose by enhancing the country’s heritage, showcasing its historical richness, and fostering positive competition among participants. He acknowledged the collaboration with Cairo’s Governorate and organizing partners, reiterating the ministry’s intention to continue launching similar initiatives as part of the ambitious Egypt Vision 2030 strategy.

Growing Public Awareness of Health and Fitness

Dr. Ibrahim Saber, the Governor of Cairo, spoke about the significance of the marathon as a reflection of the government’s dedication to promoting sports and health awareness among citizens. With over 7,000 runners participating, it underscores a growing recognition of the health advantages associated with regular physical activity. The governor highlighted that the logistical, traffic, and medical support provided by the governorate, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, ensured that the entire event ran smoothly and safely.

As the city embraces such initiatives, it not only promotes health and fitness but also solidifies Cairo’s reputation as a city where tradition meets modernity. The successful execution of the “Cairo: Cradle of Civilization” marathon exemplifies how sports can unite communities while celebrating cultural heritage, paving the way for a healthier, more active society. Moving forward, events like these will continue to play a crucial role in fostering a vibrant athletic culture in Egypt, aligning with both local and national aspirations for development.
