Facing ongoing Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon, nearly 10,000 residents from Christian villages are defiantly choosing to stay in areas known as the “Yellow Line.” These communities are asserting their right to remain on their ancestral lands amid the encroaching Israeli forces. Despite the overwhelming odds, the resolve of these inhabitants to resist displacement reflects their deep-rooted connection to their territory.
The Christian Villages Amid Conflict
In the troubled Bint Jbeil district, reports indicate that powerful explosions and demolitions occur daily. Around 1,700 Christians have remained in Debel, while Ain Ebel has about 1,200 residents, and nearly 7,000 are in Rmeish. Most of these villages, identified as predominantly Maronite Christian, are situated near Israel’s northern border. Despite the resumption of Israeli military aggression beginning on March 2, the inhabitants stayed put, demonstrating a bravado rarely seen in similar situations.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in devastating human costs, with at least 2,759 lives lost and over 8,512 individuals injured, according to the latest reports. Additionally, more than 1.6 million people have been displaced—representing approximately one-fifth of Lebanon’s entire population. Despite the lack of visible Hezbollah activity in these towns, residents are not spare from the humanitarian toll of the war, which has persisted even after a ceasefire was declared in April.
Papal Support and Humanitarian Aid
The humanitarian crisis gripping these regions has attracted the attention of Christian leaders globally, extending even to the Vatican. Recently, Pope Leo XIV delivered an unexpected video call to priests in southern Lebanon, praising their resilience and offering spiritual support. According to reports, Vatican Ambassador to Lebanon, Paolo Borgia, had organized this communication in advance, with the pope providing a much-needed boost to morale among the isolated community.
Father Najib al-Amil from Rmeish reported that the pope’s message served as a significant source of encouragement for residents, exhausted from ongoing conflict. Mayor Akl Naddaf of Debel echoed this sentiment, noting that the pope’s words served as a powerful reminder of their steadfast attachment to their land amid relentless pressure.
Despite a purported truce effective since mid-April, significant challenges remain. Humanitarian corridors have yet to be established, leaving residents isolated and in dire straits. Al-Amil highlighted severe shortages of essential medical supplies, particularly for vulnerable populations like those suffering from kidney and cancer ailments. With the nearest hospital located 70 kilometers away and unsafe routes hampering transport, the situation continues to deteriorate.
Ongoing Israeli Aggression and Daily Struggles
Debel has faced particularly heinous acts of aggression, including the desecration of Christian symbols despite the village posing no military threat to Israeli forces. Disturbing incidents—such as a soldier mocking a statue of the Virgin Mary—have ignited international outrage and raised questions about targeting Christian sanctuaries during the conflict.
In the face of this bleak reality, the mayor of Debel expressed deep frustration at the ongoing siege. The village remains cut off, with the blockade severely hampering humanitarian access. Naddaf lamented that while the Vatican ambassador could enter, aid convoys are often turned away, worsening the residents’ plight. The lack of essential services such as electricity further complicates day-to-day life, pushing families to rely on private generators for power.
A Call for Humanitarian Corridors
As the humanitarian crisis deepens, the health struggles among chronically ill residents underscore the urgent need for humanitarian corridors. Recently, lives have been lost due to the inability to evacuate sick individuals for necessary medical attention, a tragedy that continues to unfold amid the ongoing violence. The call for a secure passage for emergency medical cases is becoming increasingly urgent, as residents battle both physical ailments and the overwhelming pressure of sustained conflict.
