NEW YORK CITY: The UN Security Council has expressed strong condemnation of an alarming increase in Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and international maritime traffic. Members warned that Yemen is closer than ever to descending into a full-scale conflict, a situation not seen in the past four years. They urged Iran to cease its backing of the Houthis, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution to avert further escalation.
Rising Threats and Renewed Violence
During a briefing on Thursday, Hans Grundberg, the UN’s special envoy for Yemen, reported that the nation is facing unprecedented risks of reverting to large-scale conflict, particularly since the UN-brokered truce in 2022. According to Grundberg, intensified clashes across various fronts coupled with renewed Houthi aggressions against commercial shipping in strategic waters such as the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden serve as alarming indicators of regional instability.
Recently, missile strikes targeted a vessel, resulting in the deaths of several crew members. Grundberg noted that tensions had been escalating since July, triggered by an unauthorized flight from Tehran to Sanaa. The aftermath included airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport and missile attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities, further complicating an already dire situation.
The Fragile Truce and Its Implications
Grundberg acknowledged that the informal four-year truce had offered Yemenis their most extended period of relative peace since the onset of conflict. However, he stressed that this calm is unsustainable without genuine political dialogue and progress. A return to conflict would place immense strain on a nation already coping with the repercussions of a decade-long war and a fragile economy that cannot sustain another blow.
He called for the immediate de-escalation of hostilities, urging an end to cross-border attacks and emphasizing the critical importance of protecting the freedom of navigation in vital shipping routes.
International Response and Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis
The UK’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Kate Foster, denounced the “reckless actions” of the Houthis, which include drone strikes on Saudi Arabia and attacks on Red Sea shipping. She stressed that these provocations, along with Iranian violations of Yemeni airspace, are exacerbating tensions. The UK reiterated its commitment to Yemen and Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty while demanding the unconditional release of 73 detained UN personnel and civil society workers.
Meanwhile, the US representative, Jennifer Locetta, highlighted that the recent rise in hostilities is part of a broader campaign to exert regional influence. Since declaring navigation restrictions, Houthi forces have targeted multiple Saudi-linked commercial vessels, which raises significant concerns about international maritime security.
In light of these developments, Bahrain’s deputy representative to the UN emphasized that the situation in Yemen confirms earlier warnings about the extension of regional conflict. Blaming the Iran-backed Houthis for prioritizing foreign agendas over the welfare of Yemeni citizens, she called on the Security Council to take decisive actions to safeguard maritime security.
Humanitarian Crisis Worsens Amid Tensions
As military tensions rise, the humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate. UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher warned that hunger and health services are collapsing, posing dire challenges to the civilian population. Nearly 11 million women and girls urgently require humanitarian assistance, with 6 million facing acute food insecurity.
This worsening situation is largely attributed to inflation caused by escalating regional tensions and a significant shortfall in aid funding. Fletcher appealed to international donors for flexible and consistent support and urged all parties in Yemen to protect civilians and ensure the release of detained individuals.
