Chipotle is set to launch its first restaurant in Saudi Arabia this month, collaborating with the renowned Alshaya Group. This exciting new location will be situated at Sidra, a prime dining spot in Riyadh, adjacent to the Granada Mall. Offering its classic menu, customers will enjoy an array of burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and salads, all of which can be customized with various proteins, rice, beans, salsas, and toppings.
Expansion Goals and Market Potential
Nate Lawton, Chief Business Development Officer of Chipotle, emphasized that venturing into Saudi Arabia is a significant step in the company’s international growth strategy. He stated that this entry into the Middle East presents a remarkable opportunity to engage with one of the most vibrant consumer markets in the region. Riyadh, marked as a leading shopping and leisure hub, is deemed an ideal location to introduce Chipotle’s offerings.
In partnership with Alshaya Group, Chipotle aims to provide an exceptional dining experience while establishing a robust long-term footprint in Saudi Arabia. The company looks forward to making its mark in the local food scene, ensuring that customers can savor and customize their meals in traditional Chipotle style.
Franchise Agreement and Regional Growth
In July 2023, Chipotle signed an agreement with Alshaya Group to extend its reach in the region, marking its first-ever franchise initiative. Following openings in Dubai and Kuwait, this will be a milestone, as it represents the brand’s first attempt to enter a new country in over a decade. With 16 restaurants established across the Middle East so far, including seven in the United Arab Emirates, seven in Kuwait, and two in Qatar, Chipotle is rapidly expanding its presence in the area.
Jeff Kellen, President of Alshaya Group, remarked that Chipotle has exceeded expectations since it began operations in the region. Founded in Kuwait in 1890, Alshaya Group boasts a diverse portfolio, including brands like Starbucks and Shake Shack, with a strong service presence across MENA, Türkiye, and Europe.
Global Brand Ambitions
The opening in Saudi Arabia follows closely the recent debut of Chipotle in Mexico. Now, the fast-casual chain operates over 80 company-owned restaurants in Canada, along with 21 in the United Kingdom, six in France, and two in Germany. This extensive international footprint underscores Chipotle’s ambition to evolve into a truly global brand.
Scott Boatwright, who became CEO in late 2024, expressed his vision for Chipotle to emerge as an iconic global entity. His leadership is steering the brand toward increased visibility and recognition worldwide, making its recent Middle Eastern expansion part of a larger strategy.
As Chipotle enters this new market, it not only aims to introduce its beloved menu but also to cultivate a substantial and lasting presence within Saudi Arabia, reinforcing its status as a beloved dining option across cultures.
