In a troubling incident on Friday evening, a man disrupted Shabbat services at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan, leading to an attack on both a guard and a congregant. The situation escalated when synagogue security attempted to remove the disruptive individual. As he was escorted out, he physically assaulted a congregant and caused damage to synagogue property. More alarming, he also headbutted and spat at a member of the security team. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who has personal ties to the synagogue, confirmed the events and expressed her dismay over the attack.
Authorities quickly intervened. A police officer present for security purposes took the attacker into custody. Identified as Larry Montes, a 46-year-old resident of the Bronx, he now faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault categorized as hate crimes, alongside charges for criminal mischief.
