Canada Responds to Crisis in Lebanon Amid Tensions with Israel
In a critical moment for Lebanon, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai, recently traveled to the country to announce new humanitarian assistance and express his disapproval of Israel’s military actions. His visit comes at a time when Lebanon is grappling with significant challenges, intensifying international discourse surrounding the conflict.
Call for Sovereignty and Humanitarian Aid
During his visit, Sarai condemned what he termed as Israel’s “unlawful invasion” of Lebanon, emphasizing the need for Lebanese sovereignty. He highlighted that the country must be allowed to govern its own territory and asserted Canada’s long-term commitment to supporting the people of Lebanon. To address the ongoing humanitarian crisis, Sarai unveiled fresh programs aimed at assisting families affected by violence, increasing Canada’s total aid to Lebanon for the year to over $50 million.
Sarai’s remarks reflect a strong stance on the principle of national sovereignty. He noted, “Our commitment is long-term, and we’re there for Lebanon,” while visiting shelters housing those displaced by conflict, including Syrian refugees. Canada has continuously underscored the importance of upholding Lebanon’s territorial integrity, particularly in light of escalating tensions in the region.
International Concerns Over Territorial Integrity
On March 25, Canada issued warnings against violations of Lebanese sovereignty amid growing tensions between Lebanon and Israel. The alert coincided with Israeli plans to expand military operations in southern Lebanon. The Canadian government firmly condemned any strategies by Israeli forces that could undermine the peace and stability of the region, highlighting its commitment to supporting Lebanon in maintaining its integrity.
Efforts for de-escalation led to a framework agreement mediated by the United States, which was signed in late June. This arrangement included the establishment of “pilot zones” aimed at transitioning security control in specific areas of southern Lebanon from Israeli forces back to the Lebanese army. These zones are critical for restoring peace and facilitating a sustainable solution to the ongoing conflict.
Widespread Destruction and Significant Displacement
The current war has inflicted severe damage on Lebanon, claiming the lives of over 4,000 individuals and displacing around 360,000 people according to United Nations reports. The humanitarian situation in Lebanon remains dire, with damaged infrastructure and limited access to basic necessities exacerbating the crisis. Despite these challenges, Canadian assistance over the past decade has totaled approximately $575 million, reflecting the nation’s commitment to humanitarian relief.
In late July, the Lebanese Armed Forces accused Israel of hindering their operations to establish security in the southern regions. Israeli officials maintain that their military presence will continue until Hezbollah is disarmed, underscoring the ongoing complexities of the situation.

During his visit, Sarai also met with key Lebanese leaders, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
