Qatar Airways has recently announced the addition of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its growing fleet of aircraft equipped with Starlink internet technology. This development will enhance passenger connectivity, providing high-speed WiFi access at cruising altitudes. With over half of its Boeing 787 fleet fitted with this advanced technology, Qatar Airways aims to ensure that all passengers flying on its Dreamliners can stay connected, even during flights.
Qatar Airways Leads the Way with Starlink
As the first airline to incorporate Starlink on its Boeing 787-9 model, Qatar Airways is setting a new standard for in-flight connectivity. This initiative allows passengers to enjoy internet speeds of up to 500 megabytes per second while flying at approximately 35,000 feet. Notably, the service will be available free of charge from gate to gate, meaning passengers can remain connected during takeoffs and landings. Currently, Qatar Airways operates a total of 27 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with plans to expand its fleet further.
The partnership with Starlink, a satellite internet provider owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has revolutionized onboard connectivity. Starlink’s extensive network of over 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit allows for remarkable coverage and fast internet speeds in some of the most isolated areas worldwide. With revenue figures reaching $11.4 billion last year, Starlink has proven its reliability and value in the aviation sector.
A Comprehensive Project for Enhanced Connectivity
Qatar Airways’ ambitious plan includes equipping 150 aircraft with Starlink technology. To date, more than 23 million passengers have utilized Starlink across 86,000 flights since its implementation began in October 2024. This rapid expansion includes completing installations in approximately seven months for the Boeing 787-8, nine months for the Boeing 777, and eight months for the Airbus A350. Currently, the program is about 83% complete, with around 323 Starlink-enabled flights operating daily.

Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive Officer, expressed the airline’s commitment to providing an exceptional in-flight experience. “Our goal is to ensure that even at 35,000 feet, passengers can remain connected to what matters most to them,” he stated, emphasizing the airline’s dedication to enhancing overall passenger satisfaction.
Middle Eastern Airlines Embracing Starlink Technology
Qatar Airways isn’t alone in this endeavor. Other Middle Eastern airlines are also integrating Starlink to improve the passenger experience. In November 2025, Emirates announced its plans to retrofit over 200 of its aircraft with Starlink. This extensive project aims to accommodate 232 jets, including Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 models, enhancing the overall connectivity for its passengers.
Beyond the Middle East, companies like British Airways and Iberia are also investing in Starlink technology. British Airways has committed to making its aircraft feel more like home with efficient and fast internet connectivity, rectifying the historically frustrating experience of poor onboard WiFi.
