Turkish Red Crescent’s New Support Initiative for Palestinian Patients

In a compassionate effort to aid Palestinian patients, Fatma Meriç Yılmaz, the President of the Turkish Red Crescent, recently visited those evacuated from the Gaza Strip and currently receiving medical care in Cairo, Egypt. During her visit, she announced a new support initiative valued at approximately TL 3.2 million ($66,528) aimed at assisting patients who face financial barriers to their medical treatments.

Support for Palestinian Patients in Cairo

Accompanied by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, Yılmaz engaged with Palestinian patients and their families to better understand their medical needs. She was informed about their treatment journeys and met healthcare workers dedicated to providing care under challenging conditions. Recognizing the hardships faced by many of these patients, she emphasized the importance of access to necessary medical treatments.

The newly introduced program specifically targets Palestinians receiving care at the Palestine Red Crescent Hospital in Cairo and is designed for individuals unable to bear their healthcare costs. This initiative underscores the Turkish Red Crescent’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance in the region.

Impact of the Ongoing Crisis

Since the escalation of conflict in the region on October 7, 2023, the hospital has treated thousands of Palestinians, handling over 20,000 patients annually. Yılmaz expressed profound gratitude to the healthcare professionals involved, acknowledging their tireless efforts to provide quality care despite scarce resources. “They work with limited supplies but boundless compassion,” she remarked, highlighting the fundamental humanity behind their work.

Unfortunately, many patients find themselves unable to secure the treatment they require due to financial constraints. Yılmaz’s announcement of a three-month support program aims to alleviate this burden, ensuring that patients can access the healthcare they need to recover and reunite with their families.

Humanitarian Cooperation and Ongoing Aid Efforts

In addition to the support program, Yılmaz engaged with officials from the Egyptian Red Crescent to explore opportunities for collaboration in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Turkish Red Crescent has already made significant contributions, including approximately TL 10.5 million in medical supplies to Al-Amal and Al-Mawasi hospitals in Gaza as part of its Health Support Project. This shipment consisted of 34 types of supplies and is instrumental in assisting healthcare facilities that are overstretched and operating beyond capacity.

The Turkish Red Crescent has also been funding medicines, medical supplies, and operational costs at these hospitals for six months, helping ensure that over 150,000 people in Gaza have access to essential healthcare services. The total value of health assistance provided to Gaza since the conflict escalated exceeds TL 85 million, demonstrating a robust commitment to alleviating the suffering caused by ongoing violence.

As Gaza’s healthcare system grapples with extensive damage and shortages, the need for sustained support remains critical. Reports indicate that Israeli military operations have targeted healthcare facilities, leading to substantial damage and crippling the ability of many hospitals to function effectively. With only a limited number able to operate fully, the humanitarian crisis necessitates urgent intervention.

The ongoing situation has had devastating consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations, including women and children, who comprise a significant proportion of casualties. The Turkish Red Crescent’s efforts stand as a testament to their commitment to supporting those in dire need within the region, ensuring they are not left to face these hardships alone.
