My Journey to the UAE and the Special Place It Holds in My Heart

In the ongoing series titled “My Happy Place,” writers share insights about their favorite holiday destinations in Australia and beyond. This exploration of cherished travel memories often delves into how these places have shaped their perspectives and experiences.

Discovering Dubai: A Life-Changing Adventure

In 2007, my sister and I embarked on a journey to Dubai, aiming to spend Christmas in a region that was entirely new to us. Our father had recently taken a position as the Australian consul-general, prompting this adventurous spirit in our family. Rather than treating the trip as a mere vacation, we embraced it with open hearts and curious minds.

For two weeks in the United Arab Emirates, we immersed ourselves in the local culture, sampling Arabic mezze and partaking in thrilling activities like dune-bashing in the desert. Christmas Eve was uniquely joyous as we shared a “Santa bus” pub crawl with newfound friends. As the New Year dawned, we celebrated at a private villa while taking in stunning views of the night sky. From dolphin-watching cruises to shopping in Sharjah’s Blue Souq, our experience in Dubai was not only memorable but also transformative.

Building Life in the City of Dreams

Nearly 18 years later, the allure of Dubai continues to resonate deeply within me. Although I left the city in late 2014, I have maintained regular visits, primarily due to my sister’s family still residing there. It feels like a second home—one I realize I desperately miss, especially considering the current geopolitical climate affecting travel safety. When I moved there shortly after the September 11 attacks, many questioned my decision, but it ultimately turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

In Dubai, I learned the importance of challenging preconceptions, gaining a nuanced understanding of its culture. The friendships I formed and the experiences I had—like celebrating Iftar during Ramadan with locals—deepened my appreciation for the country’s rich heritage. Living in a vibrant share house with family and friends became a chapter filled with joyous celebrations and lifelong memories.

The Cultural Mosaic of Dubai

Dubai elicits strong feelings; people either love it or dislike its perceived flaws. For all its challenges—issues concerning labor treatment and occasional misunderstandings—what stirs my affection for the city is its remarkable safety and cultural diversity. Dining options cater to every taste, making it a culinary paradise. Moreover, the city serves as a gateway to numerous other destinations. Quick flights allow for spontaneous adventures to nearby countries such as Sri Lanka and Jordan, broadening one’s horizons and perspective.

Family-friendly activities abound, making it suitable for all ages. The emirate is known for its vibrant party culture, seamlessly blending opulence with an active social scene. Whether skydiving over the Palm Jumeirah or attending concerts, the thrill of life in Dubai is unmatched. Each experience adds another layer to my connection with this incredible city.

In conclusion, Dubai is more than just a place I lived; it represents an evolving personal journey filled with learning, friendship, and adventure. From its stunning landscapes to its unique cultural exposure, the city carved a lasting imprint on my life, ensuring that Dubai will always remain a vital part of my story.
