Basij Leader Issues Economic Alerts to the U.S. and Israel

Hossein Taeb, the head of the Basij Organization, recently issued a stern warning regarding the effects of ongoing economic pressure on Iran. He stated that if the situation persists, not only will the Iranian economy face disruptions, but it could also trigger severe economic consequences for the United States, Israel, and other nations around the globe.

The Potential Fallout of Economic Pressure

Speaking at the “Guild Basij Day” celebration in Qom on August 27, Taeb emphasized that a troubled Iranian economy could ripple through global markets, impacting economies as far as the U.S. and Israel. He insisted that these countries must adhere to certain undisclosed commitments to avert serious consequences. During his address, he touched upon topics such as the cease-fire, maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and naval blockades on Iran, suggesting that these factors are intertwined with the broader economic landscape.

Taeb accused the U.S. and Israel of abandoning military tactics in favor of economic and media warfare aimed at destabilizing Iranian production and fostering public unrest. Utilizing martial language, he proclaimed that every citizen of Iran plays a critical role in this economic struggle, positioning them as “officers of the economic war.” He further articulated the need for the Basij organization to stabilize the market, prevent business failures, encourage production, and manage consumption.

Concerns Over Fuel Consumption and Imports

In his remarks, Taeb noted that Iran’s daily gasoline usage stands at approximately 135 million liters, with imports accounting for 14 million liters each day. He argued that a mere 10% reduction in consumption could eliminate the need for fuel imports, showcasing the potential for self-sufficiency. These statements follow recent confirmations from Masoud Pezeshkian, Executive Vice President of Iran, who acknowledged the government’s challenges in importing gasoline due to U.S. naval blockades. Meanwhile, reports indicated a 30% rise in gasoline consumption in Tehran Province, further compounding the issue.

Moreover, Taeb claimed that the U.S. is relying on its Strategic Petroleum Reserve to stabilize its market during this tumultuous period. He warned that if this trend continues for the next six to seven weeks, it could lead to significant disruptions in the U.S. economy. However, he did not provide sources for his claims, leaving questions about the accuracy of his assertions.

Rising Inflation and Economic Challenges

Taeb’s statements about economic resilience come amidst alarming statistics, with point-to-point inflation reaching 84.4% in August 2026 according to Central Bank data. The surging prices of food, depreciation of the rial, and disruptions in fuel imports are placing immense financial strain on Iranian households. Concurrently, he boasted that Iran has retained control over the Strait of Hormuz and has successfully countered U.S. attempts to establish alternative shipping routes, although he did not elaborate on the specifics of these claims.

As a figure of considerable influence, Taeb has been at the helm of the Basij Organization since August 10. His previous roles included commanding the Basij Resistance Force and leading the IRGC Intelligence Organization, where he played a controversial role during times of civil unrest and political dissent. His leadership has often been marked by strong measures against protests and political activism, painting a complex picture of a man deeply embedded in Iran’s socio-political landscape.

In summary, Taeb’s remarks highlight an ongoing struggle within Iran as a result of external pressures. The implications of his statements reverberate not just within the Iranian economy but also pose potential threats to global economic stability.
