Erdoğan underscores conspiracies targeting Türkiye during Victory Day celebrations.

Türkiye commemorated the 104th anniversary of the Battle of Dumlupınar on Sunday, an event that significantly solidified the success of the Turkish War of Independence in the aftermath of World War I. This day, recognized as Victory Day, serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination that characterized this critical juncture in Turkish history.

Legacy of Leadership: Atatürk’s Role

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, along with various dignitaries, honored the martyrs and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the esteemed founder of the Republic of Türkiye. During his visit to Atatürk’s mausoleum in Ankara, Erdoğan left a touching message in the memorial book, emphasizing the enduring threats that Türkiye faces, over a century later. He reassured citizens of the government’s unyielding commitment to safeguard the nation’s independence and future. “We are steadfast in our resolve to protect the integrity of our homeland,” he affirmed.

Atatürk, a distinguished military commander, played a pivotal role during the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922, leading a fatigued army from Kütahya. Under his command, Turkish forces succeeded in pushing back the invading Greek troops, making it a decisive moment in the Büyük Taarruz or Great Offensive. This campaign, orchestrated by Atatürk, aimed to liberate Türkiye as the Ottoman Empire faced its decline. The battle not only marked a military victory but also represented a triumph over imperial ambitions during a tumultuous period.

Commemorating the Past and Present Challenges

Victory Day stands as a significant symbol against the backdrop of historical imperialism. It highlights Türkiye’s struggles for sovereignty, particularly pertinent today amid rising regional security challenges, including tensions linked to Israel’s expansionist strategies. Erdoğan expressed gratitude for Atatürk’s legacy and the contributions of early Turkish Parliament members in strategizing defense against foreign threats. “The Republic of Türkiye is an invaluable inheritance from our heroes,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of unity and brotherhood in safeguarding the nation’s future.

The Victory Day celebrations included a gathering of ministers, military leaders, and other dignitaries at the Presidential Complex. Erdoğan attended both a commemorative event and a ceremony at the Land Forces School. Notably, this day—also referred to as Armed Forces Day—pays tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers who fought for independence. It recalls historical battles that took place throughout August and their relevance to contemporary national identity.

A Vision for the Future

In a message from the Directorate of Communications, Erdoğan reaffirmed that the August 30 victory confirmed Türkiye’s enduring claim to its lands, which have been home for over a millennium. He asserted that this triumph laid the groundwork for the republic’s establishment and underscored the nation’s refusal to succumb to captivity by external powers. “Türkiye is poised to meet its goals while drawing inspiration from its illustrious history,” he remarked, highlighting recent advancements across various fields, including energy, defense, science, and technology.

Moreover, Erdoğan emphasized Türkiye’s proactive stance in humanitarian efforts, stating, “Our nation aims to eliminate oppression, supporting the oppressed without hesitation.” He reaffirmed that no provocations would deter Türkiye from upholding justice, peace, and stability within national borders.

Victory Day also served as a platform for the Turkish Armed Forces to exhibit their strength, featuring military parades across all 81 provinces and allowing the public to tour locally produced military vessels. This demonstration not only showcased Türkiye’s military capabilities but also reinforced the commitment to national sovereignty and pride.
