Turkey’s crude steel output increases by 7% in July

Türkiye’s steel sector continues to show resilience and growth, with production figures for July reflecting a robust performance. Following a successful first half of the year, crude steel production has seen a notable increase, solidifying the industry’s upward trajectory. This article provides an overview of recent developments in Türkiye’s steel production, consumption, foreign trade, and the impact of ongoing challenges in the market.

Production Growth and Trends

In July, Türkiye’s crude steel output rose by 7% year-on-year, reaching a total of 3.4 million tons. According to the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD), total production from January to July rose by 7.9%, amounting to 23.2 million tons. Despite these gains in production, finished steel product consumption took a hit, declining 5.1% in July to 3.5 million tons. However, consumption over the January-July period showed an increase, climbing 4.7% to 23.3 million tons.

This mixed bag of production and consumption figures illustrates the evolving dynamics within the sector. While production remains strong, the dip in consumption raises questions about market demand and future growth potential. The data points toward a complex landscape for the steel industry as it navigates both opportunities and challenges.

Export and Import Dynamics

The export market for Turkish steel saw an increase of 2.9% in volume terms during July, totaling 1.2 million tons. The value of these exports also rose by 4.4%, reaching $827.3 million. Over the January-July period, exports were up by 2.4% year-on-year in volume, amounting to 9 million tons, while their value experienced a more modest rise of 1.6% to $6.1 billion.

In contrast, steel imports faced negative growth, with July figures showing a 19.7% decrease in volume to 1.5 million tons and a 17.6% drop in value to $1.1 billion. For the first seven months of the year, imports decreased by 3% in volume, totaling 10.7 million tons, while the value fell by 4.9% to $7.4 billion. These trends indicate a strengthening of the export-to-import ratio, which rose from 76.9% in the same period last year to 82.1% this year. This surge underscores the increasing competitiveness of Türk steel products internationally.

Challenges in the European Market

Despite the overall positive trends, TÇÜD Secretary General Veysel Yayan cautioned against the imminent challenges posed by the quota system, particularly concerning exports to the European Union (EU). Yayan projected that the sector could see a contraction of approximately 4 million tons in EU exports. This anticipated decline may hinder the industry’s broader growth prospects and its ability to leverage international markets effectively.

Additionally, there has been a rising influx of Chinese steel products into Türkiye, with imports from China reaching around 2.5 million tons in the initial seven months of the year. Yayan emphasized the importance of implementing protective measures similar to those already adopted in various countries, including members of the EU, the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Such actions could support domestic production, stimulate economic growth, and enhance employment opportunities in the steel sector.

In conclusion, while Türkiye’s steel industry demonstrates strong production capabilities and export potential, the challenges from the EU market and increasing competition from imports necessitate strategic measures to maintain growth and stability in the coming months.
