Airlink has made significant strides in broadening its international footprint by introducing a codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways. Effective from August 31, 2023, Airlink’s 4Z flight code will be featured on Qatar Airways-operated services connecting key South African cities with Doha, Qatar’s capital. This partnership not only marks Airlink’s inaugural long-haul destination but also allows passengers greater flexibility and convenience when booking international travel.
Expanded Flight Connectivity
As per Airlink’s recent announcement, this collaboration offers an extensive schedule that includes twice-daily flights from Johannesburg, ten flights weekly from Cape Town, and daily connections from Durban, all facilitated through Maputo. Passengers can purchase tickets under the Airlink brand while flying on Qatar Airways’ state-of-the-art Airbus A350 aircraft. The codeshare agreement effectively merges regional and international travel, enabling passengers to check in their baggage all the way to their final destinations, enhancing the overall travel experience.
The Benefits of Codesharing
Codesharing allows airlines to share flight services, enabling one airline to use another’s flight number. Consequently, travelers can acquire tickets showing Airlink’s flight designations while actually boarding a Qatar Airways aircraft with their crew. This not only streamlines the booking process but also opens up a broader range of connections. Passengers flying from Airlink’s Southern African network can seamlessly transfer through Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban before continuing on to Doha or other destinations served by Qatar Airways. Future plans include the expansion of this partnership to cover additional points across Qatar Airways’ global network.
Strategic Partnership Advantages
The arrangement is fortified by Qatar Airways’ 25% stake in Airlink, which was purchased to align with South African aviation regulations allowing foreign ownership. This investment supports Airlink’s expansion without the burdensome costs associated with acquiring wide-body aircraft. Thus, Airlink can leverage Qatar Airways’ extensive network, connecting to more than 194 flights weekly across 27 cities in 20 African nations. This strategic approach allows Qatar Airways to tap into smaller markets that may not support direct flights to Doha.
A Sustainable Long-Haul Strategy
By engaging in this partnership, Airlink also mitigates the financial risks typically associated with operating wide-body international aircraft, such as high maintenance and operational costs. The codeshare effectively enables Airlink to enter the market for long-haul tickets without incurring the expenses tied to managing larger aircraft or specialized crews. Moreover, this partnership allows Airlink to maintain its focus on regional aviation, where its fleet is ideally suited for routes that cannot accommodate larger jets.
In summary, Airlink’s collaboration with Qatar Airways not only expands its service offerings but also enhances connectivity for passengers traveling between South Africa and the Middle East. With this new service to Doha, Airlink sets the stage for its international growth strategy while allowing travelers to enjoy an enriched journey that combines convenience and flexibility without sacrificing the quality of service.
