Empowering Emirati Women: Shaping the Future
The event titled “We Emerge Stronger and Better: Emirati Women Shape the Future” brought attention to the outstanding achievements of astronaut Nora Al-Matrooshi, highlighting her pivotal role as a representation of Emirati women in the aerospace industry. Organized by the TRENDS Group, the event featured directors and researchers, delving into the motivations and milestones that paved her journey into space.
Advancing the Role of Women
In his opening remarks, TRENDS Chairman Mohamed Abdulla Al Ali underscored that Emirati Women’s Day is more than just a celebration; it is a vital opportunity to recognize the significant contributions women make to the nation’s advancement. He pointed out that Emirati women play essential roles in areas like education, culture, and leadership. Their involvement has become a cornerstone for the UAE’s ongoing development.
Al Ali articulated the importance of enhancing women’s presence in leadership roles and decision-making processes. He asserted that the UAE’s model focuses on expanding women’s representation while still respecting the values and cultural identity of Emirati society. For him, empowering women is a strategic investment in the nation’s future, ensuring sustainable growth and development.
Encouraging Future Generations
Al Ali also spoke about the necessity of providing avenues for women to express their creativity and support organizational growth. He acknowledged the invaluable contributions women make within the TRENDS Group, reflecting on their positive impact on performance and results.
The chairman highlighted various cultural and youth organizations focused on emphasizing women’s aspirations and achievements while laying the groundwork for younger generations. He lauded Nora Al-Matrooshi as a paradigm for aspiring Emirati women, reminding them that even the most challenging goals can be achieved through dedication and hard work.
The Birth of an Aspiration
Nora Al-Matrooshi’s dream of becoming an astronaut originated from a young age. At just five or six years old, she participated in a school event that simulated a lunar mission. The memory of navigating through a rocket-like structure captivated her imagination and planted the seeds for her future ambitions.
Years later, a documentary featuring the launch of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft reignited her passion when she learned that one of the astronauts had a background in mechanical engineering. This realization led her to pursue studies in mathematics, physics, and eventually mechanical engineering at the United Arab Emirates University, aligning her skills with her aspirations.
Perseverance and Resolve
Nora’s determination paid off when she was selected for the UAE Astronaut Programme in 2021, marking her as the first Emirati and Arab woman to achieve this remarkable milestone. With this recognition came immense joy but also a deep sense of responsibility. She understood that she was not just representing herself; she was representing her nation.
Her rigorous training, conducted at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, presented numerous challenges. From underwater training simulations to mastering Russian for communication on the International Space Station, Nora met every obstacle with resilience. The physical and psychological demands of her preparation tested her endurance, but her discipline and commitment to continuous improvement were crucial to her success.
Unlimited Aspirations
Al-Matrooshi’s message for young Emirati women is one of ambition and action. She urges them to reach for high goals and turn their dreams into actionable plans, emphasizing immediate steps to realize their ambitions through diligent training and hard work.
She also recognizes failure as a vital part of the learning journey. Initial setbacks, she explains, should not signify the end of a dream but rather serve as valuable learning experiences to propel one forward.
Nora stresses that the support from UAE leaders has opened doors for women, empowering them in fields traditionally dominated by men. However, this opportunity also brings an obligation to prepare thoroughly and commit wholeheartedly to ensure they make the most of these chances.
