On Saturday, a significant tribute will take place as a section of U.S. 41 south of Powers in Spalding Township is renamed the Specialist David Anthony Wilkey Jr. Memorial Highway. This dedication honors a young soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Iraqi Freedom nearly 19 years ago.
A Life of Service Cut Short
Specialist David Anthony Wilkey Jr. was only 22 years old when he was killed on June 18, 2007. At the time, he was serving with the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. His life was tragically ended by a roadside bomb explosion while he was traveling in a Humvee convoy near Baghdad. For his courage, Wilkey was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, cementing his legacy of valor.
Wilkey’s early life took root in the Wilson area, where he attended North Central Area Schools. As a teenager, he moved to Elkhart, Indiana, where he completed high school. Although he left his hometown, his connections remained strong, and his spirit is remembered fondly by those who knew him.
A Community Comes Together
The dedication ceremony on Saturday will be emceed by Rich Severson, a long-time family friend who played a vital role in advocating for the highway name change. Severson’s son, Weston, shared a close friendship with Wilkey from childhood. Rich recalls personal anecdotes that highlight Wilkey’s character, such as his humor in raiding the family refrigerator, exemplifying the joy he brought to his loved ones.
Rich’s ties to Wilkey run deep, not only as a friend but also as a service member. He was serving in a different part of Iraq when Wilkey lost his life, making the day of dedication all the more poignant for him and the community.
Family Legacy and Community Support
Wilkey is laid to rest in the Powers-Spalding Cemetery, where many family members, including his father and surviving wife, Melinda, continue to honor his memory. His mother, Cindy, unfortunately, passed away in 2025. Though his family is spread between Indiana and Michigan, the bond they share in commemorating his life is strong.
The initiative to rename the highway gained momentum through a bill introduced by state Rep. David Prestin, with support from Reps. Karl Bohnak and Greg Markkanen. The Michigan House of Representatives passed the bill unanimously in November 2025, reflecting widespread community support for this lasting tribute.

“This legislation is more than just a name on a highway,” emphasized Rep. Prestin. “It’s a heartfelt gesture of gratitude towards a young man who gave everything to our state and nation. David embodied the spirit of the Upper Peninsula — he loved hunting, fishing, and the natural beauty surrounding us. This dedication will serve as a constant reminder of his selflessness and the sacrifices we make for freedom.”
The stretch of highway being dedicated is approximately seven-and-a-half miles long, transforming a familiar route into a lasting tribute that will resonate with travelers for generations. Wilkey’s story, and the sacrifices he made, serve as an enduring reminder of the values of courage, community, and remembrance.
