Egypt and Oman Establish Direct Maritime Route to Enhance Industrial and Logistical Cooperation

Egypt and Oman have embarked on an ambitious journey towards deeper industrial and logistical cooperation, as outlined in a recent high-level meeting between Egyptian officials and an Omani economic delegation. This meeting signals the intent to enhance maritime connectivity and trade between the two nations, paving the way for a strategic partnership that goes beyond mere trade exchanges.

New Maritime Routes: The Gateway to Global Markets

On September 5, 2026, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, engaged with the Omani delegation to discuss plans for a direct maritime link between the ports of Duqm and Salalah and Egyptian ports. This proposed route aims to serve as a crucial access point for markets across Africa and Asia, offering both nations new opportunities in trade and commerce. The Omani Embassy has highlighted the significance of this initiative, underscoring its potential to boost bilateral economic ties.

The meeting also featured Qais bin Mohammed Al-Yousef, the Chairman of Oman’s Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, along with Ambassador Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Rahbi, representing Oman in Egypt. Their presence highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relationships through economic collaboration.

Transforming Trade: From Raw Materials to Value-Added Industries

The talks centered on a strategic initiative to shift from traditional trade of raw materials to the development of value-added industrial chains in special economic zones. This transformation is particularly targeted at essential sectors such as metals, aluminum, plastics, and electrical equipment, which could significantly enhance production capabilities. Both Egyptian and Omani companies stand to benefit from this a shift, improving their export potential and solidifying their economic foundations.

Moreover, this strategy reflects a mutual understanding of the need to elevate the nature of trade between the two countries, fostering a climate conducive to industrial growth and innovation. With a focus on comprehensive economic development, this will likely strengthen the economic ties that exist between Egypt and Oman.

Collaborative Efforts in Dry Port Management

Additionally, the discussions have opened avenues for exchanging expertise in the management of dry ports and operational aspects of maritime logistics. The two countries are looking into collaborative projects involving shipbuilding, ship repair, and various maritime services centered in Duqm. These initiatives aim to provide a holistic enhancement of maritime capabilities, thereby improving trade efficiency.

Cruise tourism also emerged as a topic of interest, with potential initiatives under the MedCruise framework to promote tourism between both nations. By broadening their scope of collaboration, both Egypt and Oman are setting the stage for a robust and diversified partnership.

The ongoing dialogue reflects the enduring historical and fraternal relationship between Cairo and Muscat. As they lay the groundwork for this strategic partnership, both countries are not just focusing on current trade but are also envisioning a future of comprehensive economic cooperation, marking a significant milestone in their mutual development journey. This initiative is expected to herald a new era of partnership, promoting regional stability and economic growth in both nations.
