Gazan Activist Advocates for Peace with Israel, Holds Hamas Responsible for Conflict

In July 2025, Moumen Al-Natour’s life took a drastic turn when Hamas operatives arrived at his home in Gaza City, demanding he attend questioning at Shifa Hospital. Unwilling to comply, he escaped, leaving behind the chaos and fear instilled by the group. Al-Natour’s story is not just one of personal escape; it’s a narrative that intertwines the struggles of many Gazans seeking a life free from the grip of Hamas.

The Harrowing Decision to Flee

Al-Natour explained that the men at his door were not only seeking him; they threatened his entire family. Left with no choice, he moved through Khan Yunis and Al-Mawasi in search of any way to escape the threat looming over him. His journey led him not just to freedom but into the arms of international advocacy groups, eventually landing him in Italy—safe physically, yet distant from his homeland, family, and the life he once knew.

After being trapped in Gaza, Al-Natour had expressed his urgent concerns to various organizations. He advocated strongly for separating Gaza from Hamas, asserting that any hope for a future—both for Gazans and Israelis—depended on this distinct separation. “Gaza is not Hamas. And Hamas is not Gaza,” he repeatedly emphasized, a refrain that encapsulates his mission and vision for peace.

A New Path for Gaza

Upon fleeing, Al-Natour reached out to the Center for Peace Communications in the United States, which assisted him in finding pathways to safety. He navigated through militia-controlled regions before securing an evacuation plan to Canada, aided by an Italian lawyer. His family finally reached Italy by September 2025; however, Al-Natour initially encountered resistance when trying to leave, as local militia leaders sought to conscript him into their ranks.

Rejecting this armed rule, Al-Natour expressed a commitment to serve his people through governmental means rather than militia involvement. He articulated his vision for a Gaza where civilians could thrive without fear—an idea he is passionate about despite the dangers associated with opposing Hamas. His desire for peace resonates deeply as he advocates for rights, not just for himself but as a voice for many.

Vision for Rebuilding Gaza

Al-Natour’s proposals extend beyond mere separation from Hamas. He argues for a revitalized educational system that fosters tolerance and coexistence rather than radicalization. He believes that a new generation deserves a fresh start, free from the ideologies that have historically fueled conflict in the region. “Education must change if we are to prevent Gaza from being doomed to cycles of violence,” he stated emphatically.

His long-term vision seeks cooperation, not just between Gaza and Israel, but also within the broader international community. Al-Natour desires a stable Palestinian government capable of meaningful dialogues with Israel. He insists that for real change to happen, Hamas must not only be excluded from future governance but also be entirely dismantled in its current form.

Al-Natour’s journey from legal advocate in Gaza to a prominent voice for peace reflects a broader narrative of resilience. He embodies the hopes of countless Gazans for a future where peace prevails over conflict, urging global attention as Gaza remains on the margins of international discourse. His plea resonates deeply, echoing a profound desire: “We want to rebuild our city, our lives, and our futures, but not alongside Hamas.”
