Five Charts Illustrating the Economic Fallout from Trump’s Conflict in Iran

As tensions escalate in the Middle East, particularly with Donald Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran, oil prices have experienced a significant surge, raising concerns about inflation globally. The ongoing turmoil has resulted in fluctuating costs and has forced traders to reevaluate their strategies.

Surge in Oil Prices

The price of Brent Crude—an important benchmark in the oil sector—has surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since late July, following attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthi group on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia. This escalation in conflict threatens not only Saudi Arabia but also raises alarm bells across the global oil market. The U.S. military recently reported the destruction of multiple Iranian tankers attempting to target a U.S. Navy warship, while Iran counterclaims to have launched attacks on U.S. vessels and oil transporters in the Gulf region.

Despite Trump’s assertions that a U.S. victory in Iran would drastically reduce oil prices, the current situation tells a different story—indicating significant impacts on the global economy. Before hostilities escalated, oil was relatively stable at around $61 a barrel. A spike to $138 was recorded after Iran disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for a significant portion of the world’s oil. The ensuing volatility has raised inflation concerns, indicating an increase in demand for oil, which, in turn, is causing prices to climb once more.

Escalating Gas Prices

Natural gas prices have also seen a steep rise, peaking at 197 pence per therm in the UK—the highest since December 2022. Prolonged disruptions have led to Qatar suspending shipments and extending its force majeure on cargoes heading to Europe and Asia. This reduction in liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries has diminished European gas inventories, leaving markets vulnerable as winter approaches.

UK energy regulator Ofgem has weighed in on this issue, warning that the household energy price cap will likely increase. This hike, projected at £60 annually, will create additional financial strain for families as energy remains one of the most essential and unavoidable costs. Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that energy bills are already a concern for households, and measures like cutting VAT on electricity aim to ease some of this pressure.

Impact on GDP Growth

The economic outlook for Britain remains uncertain as inflation and growing costs begin to adversely affect GDP growth. Even though the economy has shown some signs of resilience, thanks in part to events like the World Cup and favorable weather conditions in June, Chancellor John Healey warned of potential challenges in the forthcoming budget. The ongoing hostilities in the Middle East are expected to complicate an already delicate economic situation.

In addition to rising energy costs, inflation in Europe has surged, affecting a range of goods and services. Recent reports estimate that Eurozone inflation rose to 3.3% in August, up from 2.9% the previous month. Energy expenses exhibited the sharpest increase, clocking in at 14.3%, while other categories fluctuated modestly.

Future Economic Implications

In a broader financial context, the bond market is responding to rising costs and economic stress. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note has exceeded 4.8%—the highest since October 2023—reflecting heightened financial anxiety. Increased energy prices have led the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates, making borrowing costlier for consumers and businesses alike.

This uptick in bond yields also influences mortgage rates, with averages for 30-year fixed mortgages reaching 6.85%, marking a peak not seen since June 2025. As the ripple effects of this conflict spread through various sectors, the economic landscape remains precarious, with numerous financial indicators pointing to looming challenges. Families and businesses alike must prepare for the multifaceted consequences of these global events as they unfold.
