The Israel Public Health Association’s wager on future developments

Yasmin Nahum, the CEO of the Israel Public Health Association (IPHA), emphasizes the vital importance of health in our lives. “Health is what enables the rest of life to flourish,” she asserts, moving beyond a simple phrase to highlight its fundamental role in our existence. As the backbone of a thriving society, maintaining public health should be a priority for everyone.

Comprehensive Health Programs Across Israel

The IPHA has been dedicated to enhancing health standards in Israel for 54 years, running about 50 branches nationwide. Their mission revolves around developing innovative treatment and rehabilitation programs, as well as preventive education initiatives. “We aim to reach individuals at every stage of health,” Nahum explains, noting the organization’s commitment to elevating individuals from vulnerable positions to better health outcomes.

Particularly focused on marginalized communities, the IPHA addresses the needs of those battling addiction, mental health challenges, disabilities, and conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nahum points out that many in these groups require support that extends beyond medical intervention, including emotional and social rehabilitation programs offered by the association.

Strategic Initiatives for Vulnerable Populations

Nahum insists that the IPHA’s outreach is crucial, especially for “the most precarious segments of Israeli society,” which include the homeless, individuals involved in prostitution, and those with addictions. The organization strives to deliver health services to those who might otherwise be neglected, continuously looking for gaps in the existing healthcare framework to fulfill unmet needs.

One notable initiative is the Choice Center, a program specifically designed for young people aged 12 to 35 suffering from both PTSD and addiction. This concept acknowledges the intertwining nature of these issues, particularly exacerbated by recent traumatic events in the region. The rise in addictive behaviors among younger individuals following the October attacks underscores the urgent need for such targeted interventions.

Addressing the Opioid Crisis

In recent years, Nahum has identified a troubling trend in prescription opioid dependency throughout Israel, which reached alarming levels by 2020. Israel now ranks high in per-capita consumption of these medications, surpassing even the United States. Addressing this crisis, the IPHA has established 17 new clinics focused on helping individuals combat addiction to opioid painkillers, advocating for reduced stigma through reframing these facilities as “consultation clinics.”

Nahum, a lawyer by training and a mother of five, has transitioned from legal work to a leadership role in public health, also participating actively in various health councils and forums. Her multifaceted approach to service development allows the association to tailor health solutions that are genuinely needed by the public.

In summary, the Israel Public Health Association, under Nahum’s leadership, exemplifies a proactive approach to public health. From addressing mental health challenges among vulnerable populations to tackling the opioid crisis, IPHA’s holistic strategies aim not only to provide immediate care but also to create sustainable health solutions that serve the broader Israeli community. Integrating these vital services into the national health system is a key aspiration, ensuring that all sections of society can access the quality healthcare they deserve.
