Germany Approves Daily Emirates Flights to Berlin
In a significant development for air travel between Germany and the United Arab Emirates, Germany has approved additional traffic rights for Emirates airline. This decision allows Emirates to establish daily flights between Dubai and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The announcement was made on September 10 during a state visit by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE, who met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner.
New Air Transport Agreement
This recent agreement marks the conclusion of extensive negotiations aimed at enhancing air connectivity between the two nations. Previously, Emirates operated flights to four German cities—Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. The addition of Berlin as the fifth entry point not only broadens Emirates’ operational scope but also positions Germany as a stronger aviation hub. Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger expressed optimism about the deal, stating that it ties Germany more closely to the UAE while facilitating limited but impactful air traffic, capped at seven flights weekly.
Chancellor Merz highlighted the importance of this agreement, noting that it strengthens economic ties between Germany and the UAE. Mayor Wegner also welcomed the news, stating that the daily long-haul flights will improve international connectivity for Berlin’s airport. The limitations on UAE airlines operating in Germany were initially set by a bilateral agreement in 1994. The German airline Lufthansa and the states of Hesse and Bavaria consistently opposed these expansions, claiming that Emirates’ flights often redirected traffic away from their own hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.
