Details of the Recent Returnees
The latest group returning to Sudan consists of teachers, students, and their families, who traveled from major Egyptian cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan. The Sudanese news agency, SUNA, reported that these returnees cover a broad spectrum of educational levels. The significant focus on involving educational personnel is critical as they prepare to resume their roles in the upcoming academic year.
Efforts by the Sudanese Embassy
Asim Hassan Ahmed, the cultural advisor at the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo, has expressed the embassy’s commitment to facilitating a smooth return for educators and students. In light of the recent developments, he highlighted the importance of efficiently coordinating these returns to ensure that families can transition back and join their peers in Sudan’s educational system. Just last week, the embassy celebrated the successful repatriation of university professors as part of this initiative.
The Voluntary Return Program and Future Operations
Montaser Othman Omar, executive secretary of the Hope Committee for Voluntary Return, stated that their operations would persist until every Sudanese individual wishing to return is accommodated. Special focus is placed on the needs of students to ensure they have the necessary arrangements in place for a timely return to their studies. On September 7, the committee successfully organized transport for nearly 980 nationals from Cairo, employing 20 buses.
In the preceding months, this program has seen substantial activity. In August alone, nearly 5,000 Sudanese individuals were repatriated through six organized trips, and an additional 6,074 returned from Egypt in July. This robust response underscores the urgency and importance of the voluntary return initiative in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The Broader Context of Displacement
Since the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan in April 2023, over 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt, according to official estimates. Prior to the conflict, around 5 million Sudanese were already residing in Egypt, making it a key destination for those escaping violence and instability in their home country. By the end of 2025, it was reported that around 428,676 individuals had voluntarily returned to Sudan as part of this initiative.
This repatriation program is also connected to an initiative launched by Egypt in October 2025. It includes a dedicated train service from Cairo to Aswan for returning Sudanese nationals. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has led to significant loss of life and displacement, with estimates indicating that tens of thousands have perished and around 13 million people have been affected. The repatriation efforts not only aim to assist Sudanese nationals but also highlight the larger humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict.
