Germany and UAE Strengthen Energy Partnership with RWE, Masdar, and ADNOC Pursuing LNG Supply and €3 Billion Offshore Wind Investment

Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are enhancing their energy collaboration, with a significant investment of over €3 billion in offshore wind projects. This partnership involves German utility RWE, Abu Dhabi’s clean-energy company Masdar, and oil and gas company ADNOC, focusing on both renewable energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies. This move signifies a strong commitment to bolster energy security and sustainability in both regions.

Strengthening Energy Ties with Strategic Agreements

During a state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany, two crucial agreements were finalized on September 11, 2026. These deals emphasize the intent for RWE and Masdar to engage in upcoming offshore wind auctions in Germany, with a projected investment exceeding €3 billion. This enhanced cooperation aims to position offshore wind as a vital component of Germany’s future energy matrix, promoting renewable energy while also ensuring greater energy security in light of global challenges.

The increasing focus on offshore wind is particularly pertinent for Germany, which aims to transition to a more sustainable energy system. As part of this partnership, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and CEO of ADNOC, remarked on the common objectives shared between the UAE and Germany, highlighting the strategic investments intended to strengthen their energy partnership.

Leveraging Experience from Previous Ventures

RWE and Masdar already share a successful track record in offshore wind projects, particularly in the UK, where they operate several significant ventures including the London Array and Dogger Bank South, which together contribute a combined capacity of 3.6 GW. This experience will be pivotal as they aim to implement similar projects in Germany, capitalizing on their complementary expertise to drive forward the renewable energy agenda.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, echoed these sentiments by emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships in achieving ambitious renewable energy goals. He expressed optimism about utilizing their collaborative experience to tap into new opportunities within the German energy landscape.

Expanding LNG Supply Agreements for Future Energy Needs

Additionally, RWE Supply & Trading and ADNOC signed a letter of intent to discuss long-term agreements for LNG supplies. This endeavor aims to establish terms for multiple LNG sale and purchase agreements that would facilitate deliveries to Germany as well as other European and Asian markets. Dr. Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE, articulated the significance of this collaboration, pointing out its potential in supporting Germany’s energy transition while diversifying RWE’s LNG portfolio.

The supplies would derive from ADNOC Gas and XRG’s growing LNG operations, covering key projects in the UAE, the United States, and other regions. This strategic collaboration draws upon a prior agreement signed earlier in 2026, showcasing the ongoing commitment to enhance energy security and sustainability across both nations.

As the UAE steps up its role as an energy investor in Europe, the partnership with Germany extends beyond wind and gas projects. It represents a comprehensive approach toward renewable energy, sustainable development, and energy security, which will benefit both countries for years to come.
