Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem has raised serious concerns over what it describes as a systematic campaign by Israel to eliminate the Palestinian presence in the occupied West Bank. This claim underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and highlights the complex political and social dynamics that define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Five Mechanisms of Control
B’Tselem has outlined five interrelated strategies employed by Israel to undermine the collective existence of Palestinians. The organization states that these mechanisms include violence and intimidation, ethnic cleansing, economic deprivation, social suppression, and a broader political agenda. According to B’Tselem, these tactics aim not only to displace Palestinian communities but also to establish an enduring Israeli-Jewish dominance in the area.
In a statement, Executive Director Yuli Novak emphasized that since late 2022, Israeli policies aimed at controlling and dispossessing the Palestinian populace have intensified. Millions of Palestinians are living under the constant threat of violence, making everyday life increasingly precarious. Novak noted, “What Palestinians in the West Bank are experiencing is part of a single political project that permeates every aspect of life.”
Violence and Displacement
One critical aspect of this situation, highlighted by B’Tselem, is the mechanism of “violence and terror.” Israeli forces and settlers reportedly employ tactics of intimidation that exacerbate existing fears among the Palestinian population. Alarmingly, data shows that over 1,100 Palestinians, including 245 children, were killed by Israeli military actions between October 2023 and August 2026.
The second mechanism involves what B’Tselem identifies as “ethnic cleansing,” which entails the forcible displacement of Palestinians and the expansion of Israeli settlements. Reports indicate that 75 Palestinian communities have faced displacement, while settlements have claimed roughly 1.07 million dunams, equivalent to about 18% of the West Bank’s territory. Furthermore, approximately 33,000 individuals have been forcibly removed from northern refugee camps, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Economic Strangulation and Social Crackdown
Beyond physical violence, B’Tselem notes that Israel has implemented “economic strangulation” to deepen the crisis. The Israeli government controls various aspects of economic life, including jobs, tax revenues, and essential infrastructure. This stranglehold has created overwhelming financial pressures on Palestinian society, pushing many toward dependency on Israeli systems. Palestinian Finance Minister Estephan Salameh has indicated that Israel may completely halt clearance revenues, which form about 56% of the Palestinian Authority’s public funds, further deepening economic woes.
B’Tselem also points out a fourth mechanism: “social and political destruction.” This includes the suppression of political expression, the closure of civil organizations, and the harassment of activists, journalists, and students. Since October 2023, at least 60 Palestinian journalists have been detained, and the total number of detentions has risen to over 25,000, showcasing a broader crackdown on dissent.
A Political Framework for Displacement
B’Tselem outlines a fifth mechanism, referred to as the “political framework.” This strategy is reportedly linked to Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s 2017 “Decisive Plan,” aimed at entrenching Israeli sovereignty and facilitating settlement expansion through land seizures. The plan presents Palestinians with three stark choices: accept Israeli governance, leave, or endure military repression. Under the current Israeli administration, settlement activities have surged, with 104 new settlements approved since late 2022.
As violence escalates, particularly following the onset of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, attacks on Palestinian communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have spiked. This dire situation calls for urgent international attention and underscores the complex realities facing millions of Palestinians in their fight for rights and sovereignty.
