Fire and smoke observed near Riyadh airport following alerts

Saudi Arabia is on high alert following reports of explosions in its capital, Riyadh. In the midst of escalating tensions in the Middle East, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar underscored the urgency of maintaining consistent energy supplies during discussions with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.

Saudi Alerts Amid Explosions

Early on Saturday, the Directorate of Saudi Civil Defense issued warning alerts to citizens after two loud booms were reported in Riyadh. While authorities confirmed the sounds, they later declared the situation safe. However, a significant cloud of smoke and flames was seen near King Khalid International Airport, raising doubts about the potential causes. As of now, no official response has come from Saudi officials regarding the source of these disturbances.

In recent weeks, the Iran-aligned Houthi forces from Yemen have intensified their assaults on Saudi Arabia. They recently launched a quick offensive around the strategically essential Bab el-Mandeb Strait, effectively capturing Mokha and several nearby islands. These developments have heightened concerns regarding the security of energy corridors vital for global oil supplies.

Impact on Global Energy Supplies

Adding to the complexities, the United States has approved a substantial arms deal potentially worth $24.3 billion involving nearly 50 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. This move is seen as a significant enhancement of the kingdom’s military capabilities amid rising conflict. The package, which includes advanced aircraft from Lockheed Martin and associated components, highlights the United States’ support for its Gulf allies during a tumultuous time.

During his conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Ishaq Dar emphasized the necessity of uninterrupted energy supplies and the safe transit of ships. He stated that these issues hold paramount importance for developing nations and the global supply chain. The dialogue reflects the urgent need for diplomatic engagement, especially considering the stalled negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.

Prospects for Peace in the Region

President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that the nearly seven-month-long war involving Iran might be nearing its end. As a consequence of the conflict, Brent crude oil prices have surged approximately 72% since the beginning of 2026, primarily due to disruptions in energy supplies through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In an attempt to counteract these challenges, Saudi Arabia has sought alternatives for its oil exports, utilizing its East-West pipeline to transport oil to the Red Sea. However, this pipeline faced disruptions from a drone attack originating in Iraq, which resulted in a temporary shutdown. This incident has led analysts to speculate about the broader implications for oil supplies.

Despite these turbulent developments, crude prices stabilized towards the end of the week, showing lesser fluctuations than initially feared. West Texas Intermediate futures fell to $100.30 per barrel, while Brent crude settled at $103.87. As the situation evolves, observers will closely monitor the geopolitical landscape and its ongoing impact on global energy markets.
