Iran has officially communicated a set of terms to the United States through mediators from Qatar, aiming to de-escalate the ongoing conflict with Washington. In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei revealed that the conditions have been forwarded to the U.S. as part of efforts to end hostilities.
Conditions for Peace
Rezaei, who recently took over as secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that they are waiting for a response from President Trump regarding their conditions. These stipulations include a complete cessation of military actions on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and an end to the naval blockade affecting the nation. Rezaei emphasized that Washington would benefit from accepting these terms, asserting that Trump’s military threats would yield no productive outcome. He added that Iran is prepared for a “decisive war” if necessary.
Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan have been actively seeking to renew dialogue since a previous memorandum of understanding expired last month. The regional landscape remains tense, especially following the U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As a response to ongoing tensions, Rezaei acknowledged the possibility of further U.S. military action against Iran, categorizing it as “very much on the cards.” However, he stated that Iran has adjusted its military strategies, now focusing on U.S. naval assets operating in the Gulf region.
Iran’s Balanced Approach
During the interview, Rezaei articulated that Iran operates with a “two-sided, twofold message” — one that includes a willingness to engage diplomatically while simultaneously preparing for potential military action. He mentioned recent military tests involving multi-warhead anti-ship missiles, underscoring that any forthcoming responses to U.S. actions would be substantial and target U.S. bases and commercial interests in the region.
Despite the current state of warfare, Rezaei asserted that efforts are underway to bring about a resolution to the conflict. He reiterated that Iran adheres to a fatwa prohibiting nuclear weapons, though he acknowledged the uncertain future of this policy amid escalating tensions and sanctions.
Additionally, Rezaei dismissed allegations that Iran was thwarting any agreements, including accusations related to alleged strikes on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. He clarified that Iran’s military actions were responses to prior aggressions against its territory. On the matter of the Strait of Hormuz, he expressed that an agreement with Oman had nearly been finalized but was ultimately postponed, indicating the complexities of regional diplomacy.
