Iran has laid out seven definitive conditions to the United States, communicated through intermediaries in Qatar. The Iranian leadership has warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to a “decisive war.” This statement highlights escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, which have persisted for months.
Iran’s Core Demands
During a recent interview, Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, confirmed that Qatar had conveyed these conditions to the U.S. President. While the entire list remains undisclosed, Rezaei made three significant points clear: cessation of military conflict on all fronts, the release of blocked Iranian financial assets, and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.
Rezaei stated, “Our conditions are an end to the war on all fronts, the release of our frozen funds and an end to the naval blockade.” This declaration emphasizes Iran’s firm stance as it seeks to reshape negotiations and redefine its relationship with the United States. The Iranian government maintains ongoing communication with mediators in Qatar and Pakistan, who have been facilitating discussions since a previous agreement collapsed in August.
Iran’s Position on U.S. Interests
Rezaei asserted that Washington must acknowledge Iran’s rights if it wishes to navigate out of the intricate situation it currently finds itself in, which he describes as self-created. “It is in Washington’s interest to accept these conditions. Trump’s threats will not yield any positive results,” he noted, conveying Tehran’s readiness for strong military retaliation should diplomatic talks falter.
The situation escalated dramatically on February 28, when U.S. and Israeli forces targeted Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on U.S. facilities throughout the Middle East and even closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz, severely impacting global oil supply chains.
Ceasefire Attempts and Future Implications
Although a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in April and a following memorandum in June momentarily subdued the violence, hostilities resurfaced as both parties accused each other of violations. Rezaei has cautioned that any future military responses from Iran could be much more substantial, targeting U.S. installations and commercial interests across the region more aggressively than in previous conflicts.
In contrast, President Trump has stated that he is on the verge of a significant decision regarding the possibility of reinstating large-scale military operations against Iran. Simultaneously, he suggested that Iran seeks a negotiated resolution.
