The Israeli Navy is set to officially receive the German-built submarine, INS Drakon, in a ceremony on Thursday. This new addition boasts advanced weaponry and enhanced underwater capabilities compared to its predecessors, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Advancements in Submarine Technology
The INS Drakon is the sixth submarine to bolster Israel’s naval fleet in recent years and represents an important upgrade as the third vessel in the Dolphin class, specifically the Dolphin II variant. This upgrade is significant, as it incorporates an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. This technology allows the submarine to recharge its batteries and generate energy while submerged for extended durations, reducing the need to surface for air supply.
Previous models could only remain submerged for a handful of days, but the Dolphin II-class submarines like Drakon can operate underwater for weeks. This capability enhances the Israeli Navy’s operational flexibility and effectiveness during missions, enabling prolonged stealth operations.
Design Features and Specifications
The Drakon measures over 70 meters in length, making it approximately 30% larger than earlier Dolphin-class submarines. Remarkably, only a small portion of the submarine is visible above water. The details regarding its internal systems have not been fully disclosed by either Israel or the German manufacturer TKMS. However, experts speculate that the increased dimensions might allow for new capabilities, including potential vertical launch systems (VLS).

The Drakon is equipped with ten torpedo tubes, comprising six standard 533 mm tubes and four larger 650 mm tubes capable of accommodating heavier armaments and specialized equipment. According to various reports, these submarines may also have the capacity to carry nuclear weapons, which positions them within Israel’s strategic military frameworks alongside land and air assets.
Despite Israel never openly confirming its nuclear capabilities, historical references by former leaders hint at the existence of such classified programs.
