Singapore Family Sells House and Car to Support 8,000km Journey to Turkey, Local News

A family of four is embarking on an extraordinary journey to Turkey by land, making sacrifices to fund their adventurous expedition. They’ve documented their preparations and milestones on social media, sparking interest and excitement within the online community.

Investment in Adventure

Mohammad Shahrom Mahat, 44, and his wife, Mastura Natasha Malek, 40, are turning their dream into reality. To finance this six-month road trip, they sold their three-room HDB flat and Suzuki car, which supports an estimated budget of around $100,000. The couple, along with their two young children, Nadine, 5, and Seth, 6, aims to travel across several countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, before ultimately reaching Turkey.

On May 3, the family announced their adventure through a viral video on Instagram, attracting over 247,000 views and more than 4,000 likes. Their excitement is palpable as they mentioned in the post, “We have been planning this for a very long time. And finally, it is happening.” As of their latest update, they have already arrived in Penang, Malaysia, and are eager to continue their journey.

Continuing Their Journey

While Mohammad continues to run his photography business from the road, Mastura has stepped away from her role as an educational therapist to focus on this family adventure. With a passion for traveling and campervan road trips that has grown over the last decade, the couple feels elated to share these experiences with their children. They received warm blessings from their parents, which adds to their resolve in making this journey a family affair filled with unforgettable memories.

Their initial plan was to travel to Morocco; however, unforeseen circumstances with selling their HDB flat prompted a change of destination to Turkey. They expressed optimism about their future, sharing that upon their return to Singapore, they plan to stay with extended family before potentially buying a new home.

Community Support and Future Plans

The online community has rallied to support the family’s adventurous spirit, leaving encouraging comments for them. One user wrote, “Have the most amazing adventure, guys! What a bold and beautiful decision,” while another commented, “Have lots of fun and make plenty of memories.” This positive feedback demonstrates the impact of their journey, inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

When asked about their travel plans after reaching Turkey, the couple stated, “We are going to take it one day at a time.” This indicates a flexibility and willingness to embrace whatever comes next, allowing them to savor each moment of their journey.

This family’s quest to explore the world serves as a reminder of the importance of adventure and the bonds that strengthen through shared experiences. Their inspiring journey not only has them traveling across borders but also embodies the dreams of many who aspire to break free from routine and embrace life’s adventures.
