While organizers have high hopes that the season will conclude in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, they are simultaneously planning for alternative options should the need arise.
Imola: The Backup Plan for Qatar and Abu Dhabi
The end of the 2026 Formula One season is currently slated to take place in Qatar on November 29 and in Abu Dhabi on December 6. Despite this, FOM has remained firm in its belief that these races will go ahead, even amidst ongoing regional tensions that may complicate matters. Stefano Domenicali, the commercial chief of FOM, indicated that a crucial decision point would arrive around mid-September. However, that timeline has now been delayed, with teams expecting to receive updates only in mid-to-late October. If Qatar and Abu Dhabi are determined to be unfeasible venues, Imola will step in as the fallback location.
Preparations are actively underway at Imola, to ensure it can host the season-ending event. If a decision is reached in late October, FOM would have roughly a month to sell tickets for the Imola race. Groundwork has already begun, including the construction of grandstands, while FOM has secured hotel accommodations and taken care of other logistical necessities in anticipation of the event. There’s also a contingency plan to transport the F1 series back to Europe from Qatar if the situation necessitates it.
Financial Implications of Hosting in Imola
While FOM is committed to its existing contracts with Qatar and Abu Dhabi, the financial stakes are considerably high. Estimates suggest that the Abu Dhabi event alone may cost promoters around $49 million in 2026, while Qatar’s contribution could reach $64 million. Together, these two events represent a combined potential revenue of roughly $113 million. Recent cancellations, such as the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, have already adversely affected FOM’s financial landscape, and further cancellations could escalate losses.
Hosting fees, corporate hospitality, and freight costs are all part of the larger financial picture, accounting for around 20% of FOM’s annual revenue. With estimations that losing both Qatar and Abu Dhabi could lead to a revenue loss of up to $180 million, the organization has a strong incentive to ensure these events proceed, provided safety is guaranteed.
However, should Imola replace the Middle Eastern venues, the financial implications would differ significantly. Hosting a race in Imola is estimated to cost around $15 million, including logistics and production expenses. While hospitality sales might help offset these costs, it’s anticipated that FOM could see a much smaller revenue stream compared to what they would receive from Qatar and Abu Dhabi, possibly as low as $25 million for an Imola event.

The final decision on whether the races can proceed lies largely in the hands of safety assessments and travel advisories from the UK Foreign Office and regional authorities.
