Egypt Launches Its First EIPICO 3 Facility for Biologics and Biosimilars – Labmate Online

In a significant advancement for the pharmaceutical sector, Egypt has inaugurated the EIPICO 3 pharmaceutical plant, marking a new milestone in the production of biologic medicines. This state-of-the-art facility, located in Tenth of Ramadan City, represents a substantial investment of over US$100 million and is the first of its kind in both Egypt and the wider Middle East.

Inauguration and Importance

The recent opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population. His attendance highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing local healthcare capabilities. The Egyptian International Pharmaceutical Industries Company (EIPICO), part of the Arab Company for Drug Industries and Medical Appliances (ACDIMA) Group, operates the plant. Esteemed figures, including Mr. Khaled Hashem, the Minister of Industry, Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, and Dr. Olfat Ghorab, Chairwoman of ACDIMA, were also present to witness this remarkable development.

The EIPICO 3 facility occupies an extensive area of 10,500 square meters and is designed to produce biologic medicines and biosimilars using a fully integrated process. This innovation is expected to make a substantial impact on Egypt’s healthcare landscape by fostering the domestic production of advanced medical therapies.

Biologic Medicines and Biosimilars

Biologic medicines are produced from living organisms rather than through traditional chemical processes. This makes them more complex and variable than conventional drugs. On the other hand, biosimilars are designed to be highly similar to already approved biologic medicines, ensuring no significant differences in quality or effectiveness. The local manufacturing of these products could greatly enhance access to advanced treatments in Egypt while also reducing the nation’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals.

At the heart of EIPICO 3’s production is a comprehensive process that ranges from the use of genetically engineered cells all the way through cultivation, purification, formulation, sterile filling, and final packaging. This extensive production stream aims not only to meet local demand but also to align with international quality standards.

Innovative Construction and Quality Assurance

The facility utilized a ‘modular construction concept,’ developed in partnership with the Swedish engineering firm Pharmadule. This method involves pre-manufacturing specialized production units, which are then assembled and tested before being transported to Egypt for installation. Such an approach ensures that EIPICO 3 meets global quality standards, providing confidence in the safety and efficacy of the products being produced.

The establishment of the EIPICO 3 plant signifies a transformative step for Egypt’s pharmaceutical industry, paving the way for the production of innovative medicines domestically. By strengthening its production capabilities, Egypt is not only enhancing its healthcare sector but also contributing to a more sustainable and self-sufficient pharmaceutical landscape. The facility is set to play a vital role in meeting the medical needs of the Egyptian population and beyond, ensuring access to high-quality biologic therapies for years to come.
