The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) recently announced an official delegation visit to Egypt to explore advancements and best practices in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the electricity sector. This visit aims to foster collaboration and exchange valuable expertise between the two nations.
Engagement with Egyptian Institutions
The Libyan delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as those from the Libyan Audit Bureau, all facilitated by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The program included a series of engaging meetings and visits to key Egyptian agencies and organizations such as the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority.
Throughout these interactions, the delegation gained insight into the operational practices and strategic frameworks that drive Egypt’s initiatives in the renewable energy sector. They were presented with detailed visual presentations that outlined project management and operational methodologies along with technical experiences in energy efficiency and grid connections.
Strategic Memorandums of Cooperation
A significant outcome of the meetings was the discussion surrounding the potential for future cooperation between Libya and Egypt. Both sides tentatively agreed to draft memorandums of collaboration, designed to enhance the exchange of technical knowledge and training opportunities. This partnership holds the promise of creating synergies that could lead to innovative solutions in renewable energy implementation.
Furthermore, the Libyan delegation had the opportunity to visit significant energy infrastructures, including the 500 kV S1 transformer station located in the New Administrative Capital. They also toured renewable energy projects such as the Zaafarana 7 wind farm, boasting a capacity of approximately 120 megawatts, and a 50-megawatt solar station in Zaafarana, along with the Amont wind station, which is part of AMEA Power and presents a substantial capacity of 500 megawatts.
Insights into Renewable Energy Projects
These site visits provided the delegation with firsthand experiences regarding the implementation and operation of various renewable energy projects. They were able to observe management, operation, and maintenance processes in action as they learned how to effectively harness renewable energy sources, ultimately enhancing the stability of the electricity systems. Additionally, the delegation visited EGEMAC Company’s factories, a leader in the manufacturing of prefabricated stations and electrical equipment.
REAoL emphasized that this visit aligns with their commitment to enhancing collaborative efforts and learning from established regional examples. By deepening partnerships and exchanges with specialized agencies, Libya aims to develop its renewable energy sector further and increase the efficiency of its energy system. This initiative is vital for achieving Libya’s objectives in sustainable energy development and for broadening its adoption of renewable energy sources.
