Egypt and Italy Conduct Joint Mountain Military Exercises — Asharq Al-Awsat

Egyptian Thunderbolt forces recently engaged in joint mountain warfare training with Italian special forces in Italy. This collaborative exercise, dubbed “4IT-EGY-T,” was reported by the Egyptian Armed Forces’ spokesperson and involved several days of specialized training focused on enhancing military readiness and skills.

Mountain Training Dynamics

During the training in Italy’s rugged terrain, participants honed various crucial skills essential for operations in challenging landscapes. The exercises included safe navigation through mountainous regions, mastering mountaineering techniques, and executing rapid descents under diverse weather conditions. The intention behind this rigorous training was to foster a mutual exchange of expertise, elevate combat proficiency, and elevate the preparedness of all involved forces to undertake complex, specialized operations. This engagement underscores the commitment to bolstering military competencies and international collaboration.

A spokesperson for the Egyptian military emphasized that these exercises serve as a strategic effort to fortify military relations with allied nations. Joint training initiatives not only enhance operational capabilities but also build trust and cooperation among participating countries.

Cairo and Rome: Navigating Complex Relations

The timing of these joint exercises coincided with recent tensions surrounding the sentencing of three Egyptian officers by an Italian court for their involvement in the kidnapping of an Italian researcher, Giulio Regeni. The court sentenced them to ten years in absentia, while acquitting Major General Tarek Saber, former head of Egypt’s National Security Agency. Regeni, who was a doctoral student at Cambridge University, disappeared in Cairo in January 2016, with his body discovered shortly after.

Egypt has consistently denied any involvement of state entities in Regeni’s case, leading to a significant strain in relations between Cairo and Rome following the incident. Although the relationship soured after the tragic events surrounding Regeni’s death, there have been signs of gradual improvement in recent years. Notably, a meeting of the Egyptian-Italian Joint Higher Committee occurred in early September, marking the first such gathering since 2014 and indicating a renewed effort to mend diplomatic ties.

The recent military exercises symbolize a positive step towards strengthening the bond between the two nations, showcasing their ability to cooperate on security matters despite previous controversies. Both countries recognize the importance of collaboration in enhancing military capabilities and addressing common security challenges, thereby paving the way for a more robust partnership moving forward.

Overall, the joint training not only enhances operational readiness but also serves as a testament to the evolving military collaborations between Egypt and Italy, reinforcing mutual interests and aligning their strategic goals. As these nations continue to work together, they will be able to address shared security concerns more effectively, fostering stability in their respective regions.
