Preliminary investigation reveals Flydubai co-pilot ‘attacked’ captain prior to emergency landing in Saudi Arabia

In a concerning incident involving a Flydubai flight, a preliminary investigation revealed a serious altercation between the co-pilot and the captain during the journey. This disturbing event led to both individuals sustaining injuries and prompted an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

Details of the Incident

According to the Saudi Interior Ministry, the investigation commenced with the collaboration of officials from the United Arab Emirates. The flight, designated as FZ1073, was on its way from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it was diverted for an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk on Wednesday. The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers and eight crew members, landed safely at approximately 9:45 AM local time (0645 GMT). Following the landing, Saudi authorities provided essential assistance to those aboard the flight.

Aftermath for Passengers and Crew

Post-landing, by 5:40 PM, passengers were transferred to a replacement Flydubai aircraft to continue their journey. Meanwhile, the remaining crew returned to Dubai through another flight operated by the airline. The captain and co-pilot were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment based on their injuries. Once their conditions improved and they received clearance from medical personnel, they were escorted back to Abu Dhabi by an Emirati security team early Thursday morning.

Response from Flydubai and Ongoing Investigations

Following the incident, Flydubai acknowledged that an altercation had occurred in the flight deck but ensured that the crew acted decisively to secure the aircraft and ensure a safe diversion to Saudi Arabia. Authorities confirmed that both the captain and first officer were injured but that all passengers and crew members were unharmed and accounted for after the landing.

As part of the ongoing inquiry, the National Transport Safety Center of Saudi Arabia announced that its safety investigation team has begun looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. This team is collaborating with various authorities to scrutinize the aviation safety aspects and gather all relevant information and evidence regarding the altercation in the cockpit.

This incident not only raises questions about in-flight safety but also emphasizes the ongoing need for stringent regulations and protocols within the aviation industry to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Ensuring that crew dynamics are effective and stable is essential for maintaining safety on board commercial flights.
