Jerusalem’s Devoted Baseball Mom Fuels Growth of the Sport in Israel

Basketball and soccer dominate the sports scene in Israel, but one energetic individual, Callie Mitchell, is determined to elevate baseball’s profile in the country. As an American-born Evangelical Christian residing in Jerusalem and a mother of four, Mitchell is championing baseball as a vibrant and engaging option among sports in Israel.

Growing Interest in Baseball

Mitchell’s passion for baseball—often referred to as America’s Pastime—has already sparked interest in the sport within Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land. She emphasizes, “There is much more interest in baseball than people realize. Baseball has the potential to be intertwined with Israeli culture.” Her commitment to the sport is evident as she transitions from a baseball mom to the Jerusalem regional director for the Israel Association of Baseball (IAB) and the leader of the Jerusalem Lions Baseball nonprofit.

Building a Strong Foundation

Mitchell has actively participated in nurturing baseball initiatives in Jerusalem, welcoming people of all ages, from young children to adults. She is hands-on in the day-to-day operations of running baseball programs, focusing on attracting new players while also nurturing existing talent. Her journey into leadership began after a pivotal meeting; she quickly learned that the organization needed revitalization, including rebuilding staff and enhancing youth and adult leagues to secure a solid future for baseball in the community.

In her new role, she recognized gaps that had hindered the program, particularly in communication and community engagement. By establishing improved channels for interaction and transparency, Mitchell set out with the goal of creating a welcoming environment for families participating in baseball.

From Vision to Reality

Mitchell’s passion for baseball translates into tangible actions. After taking over, she quickly sought funding to enhance facilities and resources. Her commitment included purchasing equipment like helmets for players, affirming her belief that parental contributions should directly benefit their children’s experience in the sport. Under her leadership, participation in baseball increased significantly, rising to 75 players last year, with an expected influx of additional sign-ups this year.

Moreover, Mitchell’s long-term vision includes constructing a comprehensive baseball complex in Jerusalem that could host international tournaments, providing a platform for local players while attracting visitors to explore iconic city attractions. Her aspirations extend to enabling Israeli youth to access collegiate baseball opportunities abroad, thus encouraging a cyclical return to the sport in their homeland.

Personal Journey and Community Involvement

Mitchell’s connection with baseball is deeply personal, shaped by a rich family history woven into the fabric of the sport. Her father, Jerry Narron, has an impressive legacy in Major League Baseball, having played and coached for various teams. It’s this heritage and passion that fuel her belief in the potential of baseball to thrive in Israel.

While navigating her role, Mitchell acknowledges the challenges she has faced as a non-Jewish community member in Israel. Yet, through baseball, she has fostered connections that make her feel at home. The friendships she has formed within the baseball community have helped solidify her identity in a land rich with diversity.

Mitchell’s determination and insights continue to shape the landscape of baseball in Israel, positioning the sport for future generations. Her leadership inspires both players and families, culminating in a movement aimed at making baseball an integral part of Israeli culture. As she wisely puts it, “If you build it, they will come,” envisaging a flourishing baseball scene that would enrich the country culturally and socially.
