Former PA Minister Refutes Allegations of Election Manipulation After Haaretz Report

Former Palestinian Authority Minister Sufian Abu Zaida, known as “Coal Eyes,” has publicly rejected claims that he attempted to sway the Israeli elections. In a recent interview, he clarified his role as a mediator, emphasizing that he did not dictate the timing of sensitive information shared between Hamas and Israel.

Clarification on Allegations

Abu Zaida explained, “I did not select the timing of the reporting about the message from Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.” He stated that as a mediator, he has no control over information dissemination. This response was in reference to claims made in Israel that suggested he was trying to manipulate the political landscape ahead of the Israeli elections set for late October.

In a separate report by Haaretz, it was noted that the UAE’s President, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, allegedly warned Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu about impending actions planned by Hamas. While this assertion has stirred considerable public debate in Israel, Netanyahu’s office has denied receiving any such warning. Abu Zaida maintains that his role was merely to communicate Sinwar’s message, which included a notion of significant developments that could reshape negotiations and affected individuals in Israeli prisons.

Implications of Hamas’s Actions

Reflecting on Hamas’s actions during the October 7 attack, Abu Zaida characterized it as a reckless gamble that has resulted in devastating consequences for the Palestinian people. He expressed concern that none of the objectives Hamas outlined—such as addressing matters related to Jerusalem and Palestinian prisoners—were accomplished. In fact, he suggested that the situation for Palestinians has worsened in the aftermath of the attacks.

He spoke about his experiences mediating between Hamas and Israel, during which he attempted to negotiate terms for the exchange of hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners incarcerated in Israeli facilities. With a deep understanding of both sides, Abu Zaida shared his skepticism regarding the attack’s success and the implications it has for future peace efforts.

Concerns About Palestinian Elections

Abu Zaida also commented on the Palestinian Legislative Council elections scheduled for November 28, stating that he doubts they will proceed as planned. Citing President Mahmoud Abbas’s apprehensions about losing power to opposition factions, he noted that Abbas is keenly aware of the changing political dynamics.

He believes that Abbas is evaluating various factors, including the strength of opposition movements, before making any final decisions about the elections. This sentiment reflects broader concerns within Palestinian politics regarding leadership stability and the future direction of governance.

Abu Zaida has observed increased collaboration among opposition factions, including those led by Mohammed Dahlan and Hamas. He emphasized that any moves against Abbas’s leadership will depend on how effectively these entities can unite, suggesting a potential shift in the political landscape.

In summary, Sufian Abu Zaida’s insights not only highlight the precarious position of Palestinian leadership but also the challenges presented by external pressures and internal divisions as Palestine navigates through turbulent political waters.
