Kurdish Reporter Reveals Claims of Mistreatment During Turkish Imprisonment

Turkish authorities have come under scrutiny for their treatment of refugees at the Kocaeli deportation center, according to reports from Kurdish journalist Zanyar Aziznezhad. In a recent interview, Aziznezhad recounted harrowing experiences during his year-long detention after fleeing political persecution in Iran. This revelation has raised serious concerns regarding human rights and the ethics of refugee management in Turkey.

Inhumane Conditions and Denial of Basic Needs

Aziznezhad, recognized as a political refugee by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), fled Iran in 2018. He arrived in Turkey, where, despite having been granted refugee status, he faced threats of deportation. Upon his arrest in July 2023, he was placed in cramped quarters alongside 40 others in a room devoid of necessary amenities such as food, water, and hygiene facilities. After a night in such deplorable conditions, he was transferred to a small room meant for four but cramped with 12 detainees, demonstrating a systematic neglect of human dignity.

“Human dignity was completely disregarded there,” Aziznezhad told the media. Personal belongings were not allowed, and detainees were permitted only 20 minutes of outdoor time each day. Reports indicate that during their detention, individuals were subjected to forms of torture, including beatings and harassment, which further compounded their suffering.

Human Rights Violations and International Response

Reports have emerged suggesting that Israel is contemplating taking legal action against Turkey at the International Criminal Court over alleged human rights violations, including the treatment of Kurdish individuals. Aziznezhad expressed hope for justice against the Turkish authorities for their oppressive practices. He highlighted that, while local human rights organizations like ASAM occasionally visited the detention center, these visits did not expose the genuine and widespread abuses occurring behind closed doors.

Detainees have faced significant challenges, not only in terms of their physical safety but also concerning their basic health needs. Access to medical treatment was almost non-existent; care was only extended to those in dire conditions or those who agreed to sign deportation waivers. This further reflects a cruel system intent on leveraging fear for profit by gaining funds under the pretense of handling illegal immigration.

Allegations of Human Trafficking and Exploitation

Aziznezhad also shared alarming insights into the operational aspects of the deportation center, alleging that Turkish authorities actively engaged in human trafficking. Reports suggest that they rounded up individuals suspected of attempting to migrate to Europe, including families who had lived in Turkey for years. Detainees were coerced into signing deportation forms, allowing Turkey to claim that they were simply returning economic migrants, thereby enabling the government to receive humanitarian funding from the European Union and other organizations.

“They were systematically forced to sign deportation forms,” Aziznezhad detailed, emphasizing that the vulnerability of detainees—including political refugees and members of marginalized communities—was exploited for financial gain. Estimates made by Aziznezhad indicated that around 11 buses filled with detained individuals were deported weekly, further illustrating the scale of this troubling situation.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid Suffering

Despite the pervasive mistreatment, Aziznezhad held onto a semblance of hope as he anticipated reuniting with his wife and two children. He spoke of a small comfort found in creating prayer beads from olive pits during his imprisonment. This little act of artistry provided him with some solace amid the grueling challenges faced within the deportation center.

The ongoing situation calls for immediate international attention to uphold the rights of refugees and ensure humane treatment. Countries worldwide must recognize the responsibility to protect those seeking safety, especially vulnerable populations caught in the crossfire of political and economic strife.
