Türkiye is on the verge of officially launching the 153-kilometer Cerkezkoy-Kapikule segment of the Halkali-Kapikule high-speed rail line on October 9. This ambitious project will enhance the nation’s high-speed rail infrastructure, connecting to Kapikule and the Bulgarian border. According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to attend this significant inauguration ceremony, marking a remarkable milestone in Türkiye’s transport capabilities.
Enhanced Travel Efficiency
The newly constructed section is designed for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and includes a double-track system that boasts 31 bridges, eight cut-and-cover tunnels, two viaducts, and numerous underpasses and culverts. In total, 353 kilometers of new rail have been laid as part of this project. The anticipated improvements in travel times are substantial. Passenger journeys along the Halkali-Kapikule route will drop dramatically from four hours to just 90 minutes, while freight transit times will be significantly reduced from 8.5 hours to just 3.5 hours.
As a result of this infrastructure project, rail capacity is projected to increase fourfold, with the annual passenger capacity expected to rise from 600,000 to nearly 3 million. Additionally, freight capacity will see a significant increase from 1.5 million tons to around 9.5 million tons annually, as noted by Minister Uraloglu. This increased capacity will facilitate better access to European markets, directly benefiting industrial zones and ports in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Tekirdag, and the broader Trakya region.
Integrating into the European Rail Network
The Halkali-Kapikule project not only enhances local infrastructure but also strengthens rail connectivity with Europe. It marks a vital gateway for rail transport between Türkiye and European countries. The expansion at Kapikule, which is Türkiye’s primary rail crossing into Europe, will see the number of tracks increase from 23 to 42, with the total track length more than doubling. This upgrade includes a pivotal 2.4-kilometer section that will be converted to double track, optimizing the flow of goods and people across borders.
Halkali-Kapikule’s expansion is expected to streamline customs and inspection processes, significantly reducing wait times at the border. Uraloglu has referred to the line as a crucial component for the Middle Corridor, which links Türkiye to the extensive European rail network. This route will also serve as the western terminus of a broader Development Road designed to connect Iraq’s Al Faw Port to Europe via Türkiye.
Future Prospects and Ongoing Developments
Construction efforts are still ongoing, with the Ispartakule-Cerkezkoy section and the link from Ispartakule to Halkali under development. Once these sections are completed, the government anticipates that the entire line will further solidify Türkiye’s strategic importance in facilitating rail connectivity between Europe and Asia. As a result, not only will trade become more efficient, but travel will also be enhanced, promoting cultural exchange and economic cooperation.
In conclusion, the inauguration of the Cerkezkoy-Kapikule segment will be a crucial step toward a more interconnected Türkiye, making transportation more efficient while fostering economic growth through improved access to European markets.
