Uniper Targets Biomethane Production and Export in Turkey

German energy company Uniper is exploring opportunities for biomethane production and export in Türkiye in collaboration with a domestic waste-to-energy enterprise. This initiative aligns with both companies’ long-term sustainability goals and presents a potential solution for renewable energy demands in Europe.

Collaborative Efforts in Biomethane Production

Through a signed memorandum of understanding with Biotrend Enerji, Uniper aims to assess the feasibility of adapting Biotrend’s existing biogas facilities to generate biomethane. This conversion process holds an exciting prospect, with a projected annual output of approximately 1.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of biomethane. Once produced, this renewable energy could be integrated into Turkey’s gas network, allowing for transport to neighboring Greece or Bulgaria for eventual import into the European Union, contingent upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

Michael Lewis, the CEO of Uniper, emphasized the significance of biomethane as a dependable and economically viable option for reducing emissions from European industries. This development is part of Uniper’s broader strategy to diversify its energy supply portfolio, which now includes secured biomethane production from several major plants in Murcia, Spain.

Investment in Renewable Energy Infrastructure

Uniper’s commitment to biomethane extends further with its established infrastructure, which facilitates an integrated supply chain from biomethane to bio-LNG at the gate terminal in Rotterdam. This robust system demonstrates the company’s intent to leverage existing assets while expanding its renewable energy capacity. In alignment with these goals, Hakan Göral, Group CEO of Doğanlar Holding (Biotrend’s parent company), highlighted the transformative potential of biomethane to optimize Türkiye’s waste and biogas resources for higher-value renewable energy production.

Türkiye’s Potential in Biomethane Production

As Türkiye aims to enhance its utilization of local energy sources, it finds itself at the intersection of a growing European appetite for renewable energy. A report by Biyoyatder (Biomethanization and Organic Waste Processing Plants Investors Association) suggests that Türkiye could generate up to 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of renewable biomethane annually by 2040, provided that existing biogas and landfill gas infrastructures undergo necessary upgrades.

Currently, Türkiye operates 101 biogas facilities and 97 landfill gas plants, laying the groundwork for significant potential growth. Biyoyatder anticipates that with strategic improvements, the country could achieve biomethane yields of 3 bcm by 2030, 5 bcm by 2035, and ultimately reach 10 bcm by 2040.

Future Outlook for Biomethane in Europe

The European Commission has recognized the urgency for member states to invest more in biomethane initiatives and domestic renewable energy. President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a collective effort to double down on these resources. Türkiye’s advancements in biomethane production could serve as a critical component in meeting Europe’s energy transition goals and enhancing energy security.

In summary, the collaboration between Uniper and Biotrend represents not only a significant step for renewable energy in Türkiye but also an opportunity for Europe to harness cleaner energy sources. As both companies work toward unlocking Türkiye’s biomethane potential, the path ahead looks promising for sustainable energy solutions that can ultimately benefit the larger European market.
