Flydubai Travelers Worried About Potential Hijacking by Iran or Yemen Following Co-Pilot Assault

Passengers aboard flydubai flight 1073 faced a terrifying ordeal when the co-pilot attempted to take control of the airplane using a cockpit axe. Initially, many individuals on board believed they were en route to Iran, even after the co-pilot’s aggressive actions were subdued. The incident unfolded dramatically, with the crew and courageous passengers preventing a potential disaster involving 182 individuals.

### Co-Pilot’s Violent Assault

The co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, launched an assault against the pilot, Smit Machchhar, creating panic within the aircraft. His aim appeared to be catastrophic—attempting to force the airplane into descent as though he wanted to crash it into an area like Ben-Gurion Airport. Passengers can only describe the harrowing experience as “10 minutes of horror.” After a dangerous struggle, Machchhar and other passengers—including several Israelis—succeeded in restraining Hammami and managing to stabilize the aircraft just moments before disaster struck.

Although the co-pilot was subdued, passengers remained anxious until the plane finally touched down at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. With chaos reigning onboard, many passengers expressed distrust toward the flight crew, including the pilots who had isolated themselves within the cockpit during the emergency. Uri Pintov, a passenger traveling with his family, recounted feelings of mistrust and fear. He recalled questioning what the co-pilot’s real intentions were: whether he planned to hijack the aircraft or even crash it in a populated area.

### A Psychological Battle

The uncertainty lasted for nearly an hour and a half as passengers were left in the dark about their fate. Pintov described a gripping atmosphere where families, including his own, felt as though they were held hostage. When he finally learned that they were in Saudi Arabia, he continued to worry about what awaited them on the ground. “As we landed, I forced a crew member to tell me where we were,” Pintov shared, emphasizing the atmosphere of fear that pervaded the flight.

Michelle Pintov, Uri’s wife, told how she witnessed the chaos from her seat near the cockpit. She mentioned seeing blood during the attack and hearing distressing murmurs from those in charge. “It felt surreal to be in an aircraft under such circumstances,” she conveyed. The Pintov family had chosen flydubai primarily for its lower fare compared to Israel’s national carrier, El Al, never suspecting they would encounter such peril.

### Aftermath and Revelations

Upon landing, the Pintov family and other Israeli passengers received kindness and care from Saudi personnel, who provided food and medical assistance. However, doubts lingered as they worried about returning home and the process of boarding another plane. The fact that they would have to trust another flydubai craft raised eyebrows, leading Pintov to question the adequacy of safety checks before a flight.

While some felt anxiety linked to the prevalent global hostility towards Israel, Michelle Pintov separated the events from a timetable, despite it coinciding with the third anniversary of an earlier tragic incident involving Israel. She noted that the hatred resonating worldwide has manifested in violent actions and that individuals like the co-pilot might reflect such sentiments.

In light of their ordeal, the Pintov family aims to travel again, possibly during the upcoming Hanukkah vacation. However, they have resolutely decided against flying with flydubai in the future, a decision rooted deeply in their traumatic experience. The legacy of that day will undoubtedly remain with them, a stark reminder of both the dangers of air travel and the resilience of the human spirit in times of crisis.
