Egypt’s Sisi Dismisses Any Threats to Nile Water Entitlements

Egypt’s Commitment to Nile Waters and Regional Stability

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has made it clear that Egypt will not compromise on its rights to the Nile waters. In a recent meeting of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, he emphasized the historical significance of the Nile as Egypt’s lifeblood and a crucial element for the nation’s existence.

Protection of Nile Water Rights

During a meeting that coincided with the commemoration of the 53rd anniversary of the October 1973 war against Israel, Sisi expressed strong opposition to any actions that might jeopardize Egypt’s share of Nile waters. He reaffirmed that Egypt’s water rights are embedded in international law and reiterated that these rights are non-negotiable. “The Nile is our lifeline,” he stated, making it clear that any attempts to undermine Egypt’s water security would be met with resolve.

This issue has become increasingly pressing as Egypt, along with Sudan, tussles with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Egypt fears that the dam’s filling and operation could significantly diminish its annual allocation of 55.5 billion cubic meters of water. Sisi’s commitment to defending Egypt’s water rights highlights the importance of cooperation among the Nile Basin countries but also underscores the nation’s determination to safeguard its vital resources.

Support for Palestinian Rights

Sisi’s address also touched on the situation in Palestine, where he condemned any attempts at displacing the Palestinian population. He called for the full implementation of US-led proposals aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing that peace in the region hinges on these agreements. Sisi believes that achieving an independent Palestinian state in line with international resolutions is key to a fair and enduring peace.

Citing Egypt’s historic peace treaty with Israel, Sisi argued that long-lasting conflict can be transformed into coexistence through resolute political will and dialogue. His remarks serve to remind that peace is an attainable goal when pursued earnestly, a message reinforced by Egypt’s past.

Regional Stability Amid Challenges

President Sisi is acutely aware of the broader challenges facing the Middle East, which are exacerbated by rapid global shifts and crises. He voiced concerns over the ongoing turmoil that continues to impact the region and lead to significant displacement of people. At the same time, he reassured Egyptians that their national institutions and the solidarity of the populace are key to safeguarding the nation’s stability.

The Egyptian leader reiterated his country’s stance on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab nations, asserting that the security of Gulf states is interlinked with Egypt’s own national security. He condemned ongoing attacks on Arab countries and emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation through vital maritime routes.

In closing, Sisi reaffirmed that Egypt’s armed forces stand ready to defend national interests and resources at all times. His remarks illustrate a broader commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability while protecting Egypt’s sovereignty in a challenging geopolitical landscape.
