Chris Murphy Visits Saudi Arabia Amid Warnings of Incoming Houthi Missiles

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut is currently visiting Saudi Arabia amidst escalating tensions, as the Houthis launch missile strikes against the kingdom. The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has responded with a security alert advising Americans in the area to exercise caution.

Senator Murphy’s Middle East Trip

Senator Murphy, who is eyeing a run for the presidency in 2028, landed in Doha, Qatar, over the weekend before continuing to Riyadh. His trip aims to examine the ongoing conflict linked to Iran and engage with regional leaders about the war’s impact and efforts to reach a peaceful resolution. While in Riyadh, Murphy remarked on the recent Houthi airstrikes and attributed the escalating regional chaos to actions taken during President Trump’s administration.

Murphy noted alarming alerts during his stay in Riyadh, specifically mentioning the urgent notifications regarding Houthi missiles aimed at the capital. He describes the situation as a “full blown regional war,” aligning with warnings provided by experts about the consequences of U.S. military actions in the Middle East.

Houthi Attacks Intensify

On Monday evening, the Houthis executed a series of airstrikes, with their spokesman, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, claiming that multiple Saudi airports were targeted, including King Khalid International Airport. The group has issued a stark warning against international travel over Saudi airspace, stating that the attacks involved “a large number of ballistic and cruise missiles and drones.” This resurgence in Houthi aggression comes after a period of relative calm and is closely linked to the broader conflict involving the U.S. and Iran.

The ongoing violence has raised alarms, particularly as the U.S. has been engaged in a conflict with Iran since February, and the Houthis have resumed their offensive against Saudi Arabia. The U.S. State Department classifies the Houthis, based in Yemen, as a proxy of Iran, which provides them with financial and military support.

U.S. Embassy Security Alerts

In response to the spike in Houthi attacks, the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has issued a security notice emphasizing the need for Americans in the country to remain vigilant. The embassy advises citizens to keep a low profile and stay alert in places associated with the United States. The warning is particularly urgent given the possibility of aerial attacks, which heightens concerns about the safety of U.S. nationals in the region.

“Due to the ongoing security situation in Saudi Arabia and the potential for aerial drone or missile attacks, the U.S. Mission strongly encourages all U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and to heed national alerts from Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense,” the embassy stated in its alert.

Conversations on U.S.-Saudi Relations

Murphy’s visit includes discussions about various facets of U.S.-Saudi relations, which have been complicated by controversies like the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi kingdom’s business dealings within the United States. Despite criticizing the Saudis, Murphy engaged in what he described as an “honest, provocative conversation” with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Murphy emphasizes the importance of U.S. legislators being present in the Middle East during this turbulent time, suggesting that continued diplomatic engagement is crucial for navigating the complexities of ongoing regional conflicts. As the situation evolves, Murphy intends to share insights from his meetings, aiming to keep dialogue open between the U.S. and its allies during these critical moments.
