Morocco and UAE Enhance Military Relations as Africa’s Second-Strongest Military Cuts Links with Abu Dhabi and Prohibits Its Military and Civilian Flights

Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are strengthening their military ties, highlighting a robust partnership amidst regional tensions. Recently, General Mohamed Berrid, Inspector General of Morocco’s Armed Forces, hosted Lieutenant General Issa Saif bin Ablan Al Mazrouei, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces. This gathering marked the third session of the Moroccan-Emirati Joint Military Committee, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to defense cooperation.

Recognition of Military Excellence

In acknowledgment of Lieutenant General Al Mazrouei’s role in enhancing bilateral military relations, King Mohammed VI awarded him the Grand Officer rank of the Military Order of Merit. This recognition not only cements the personal rapport between the two nations’ military leaders, but it also symbolizes the shared commitment to bolster security cooperation. During their discussions, both commanders praised the strengthening of their partnership, focusing on capability development, defense industry advancements, and opportunities for training exchanges.

Commitment to Defense Collaboration

The two countries reiterated their commitment to expanding defense collaborations based on a military agreement initially signed in 1980. This longstanding agreement forms the foundation of their evolving relationship, which seeks to encompass various aspects of military readiness and strategic alignment. An official statement from Morocco’s Armed Forces has further emphasized the progress they’ve made in joint training sessions and the development of defense technologies.

As part of their collaboration efforts, the Emirati military delegation is scheduled to participate in the forthcoming Marrakech Air Show in 2026. This event will serve as an additional platform for both nations to showcase their military capabilities and foster further international military relations.

Regional Tensions and Diplomatic Relations

Amidst the strengthening ties between Morocco and the UAE, diplomatic tensions are escalating elsewhere in the region. Recently, Algeria officially severed its diplomatic relations with the UAE, marking a significant geopolitical shift. On September 10, the Algerian government ordered the Emirati ambassador to leave within 48 hours. Furthermore, they barred all UAE-registered military and civilian aircraft from their airspace, citing “provocative or hostile acts.”

This decision follows Algeria’s previous decision to sever ties with Morocco in 2021, igniting concerns over the growing rift in North Africa. Algeria’s actions reveal its strong stance on foreign policy, which extends to its support of the Polisario Front’s claims to Western Sahara, opposing Morocco’s autonomy plan that has garnered support from around 120 countries.

As Algeria escalates its diplomatic rift, it illustrates how foreign policy conflicts can have extensive implications, affecting economic and diplomatic relationships. Such dynamics are not unique to this region; for instance, China has similarly utilized its economic influence to solidify its stance on Taiwan, showcasing that diplomatic relationships in the international arena are often intertwined and complex.

The evolving military cooperation between Morocco and the UAE, set against a backdrop of regional discord, signifies the strategic importance these nations place on defense partnerships in an increasingly precarious geopolitical landscape.
