Pakistan Maintains a Significant Military Presence in Saudi Arabia, Says Foreign Ministry

Pakistan has significantly increased its military presence in Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by the Foreign Ministry. This development comes amidst heightened regional tensions, outlining the strategic security cooperation between these nations.

Military Deployment and Strategic Partnership

According to Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan, the Pakistani government has deployed a considerable number of military personnel and resources in Riyadh. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen defense relations among Türkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, which was formalized through the Mecca Alliance established on August 7. Khan emphasized that this alliance is primarily defensive, aimed at protecting its members against external aggressions.

The spokesperson clarified that while these forces would not engage in offensive operations against the Houthis in Yemen, their presence is crucial for safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The alliance allows for a collaborative assessment of security threats, enabling the member countries to operate within a clearly defined mandate.

Historical Military Ties

The military relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is long-standing, dating back to 1982. Khan noted that Pakistani armed forces have been active in various capacities within Saudi Arabia, including logistical support and training missions. This enduring partnership has seen a steady presence of Pakistani troops in the kingdom, though specific numbers and operational details remain undisclosed due to their sensitive nature.

Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, a representative of the Pakistani military, reiterated this notion, indicating that Pakistani forces have consistently provided various forms of support over the decades. He refrained from specifying troop levels but affirmed their longstanding commitment to the region’s security.

Reaffirming Neutrality and Regional Mediation

The announcement of Pakistan’s military deployment also comes in the wake of a New York Times article alleging that Pakistani fighter jets were involved in attacks against Houthi targets in Yemen. The Pakistani government has categorically denied these claims, stressing their role as a neutral party in the conflict and positioning themselves as honest brokers in regional diplomacy.

In light of escalating tensions earlier this year, especially following the U.S. and Israel’s military actions against Iran, Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic engagement. The country successfully mediated a ceasefire in April and facilitated high-level negotiations that culminated in an agreement between Washington and Tehran on June 18. This showcases Pakistan’s commitment to promoting stability and dialogue in a complex geopolitical landscape.

In summary, Pakistan’s military presence in Saudi Arabia is part of a broader strategy focused on mutual defense and security cooperation within the Mecca Alliance. The historical ties between these nations, along with Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives, underscore their commitment to fostering regional peace and stability amidst ongoing conflicts.
