Turkey to Prohibit Social Media Accounts for Under-15s Starting November 1

Türkiye is set to implement new regulations that will restrict social media accessibility for children under the age of 15. This measure, announced by the Presidential Cybersecurity Office, will take effect on November 1. The intent behind this legislation is to ensure a safer online environment for minors, aligning with the growing global concern over children’s exposure to digital content.

New Regulations Outline Age Restrictions

The official announcement was made in the government’s Official Gazette, Resmi Gazete, on October 10. The regulation emphasizes the need for social media platforms to manage age restrictions more strictly. Starting from November 1, social media companies must not allow users younger than 15 to create accounts. The newly established rules signify Türkiye’s commitment to safeguarding its youth in an increasingly digital landscape where they are often vulnerable to various online dangers.

Implementing Age Verification Procedures

To enforce these new guidelines, age verification will be conducted via Türkiye’s e-Devlet government services portal. This process is designed to uphold users’ privacy, as it will not require the disclosure of personal information during verification. By utilizing a government-backed platform for this purpose, Türkiye aims to enhance the integrity of user data while implementing essential safety measures for younger users.

Enhanced Protection for Teenagers

In addition to restricting accounts for those under the age of 15, the regulations introduce a specific protective mode for teenagers aged 15 and older. Accounts for these users will automatically be set to private, significantly reducing the likelihood of unwanted interactions from strangers. Furthermore, teenagers will be barred from hosting live streams, which often expose them to a wider audience, and from receiving targeted advertisements that could compromise their online experience.

Deadline for Existing Accounts and Compliance

Social media platforms are required to complete age verification for existing accounts by March 31, 2027. Any accounts found to belong to users under the age of 15 will be deactivated under the new regulations. This requirement not only reinforces the age restrictions but also places the onus on social media companies to comply with the latest governmental standards for protecting minors.

These upcoming changes reflect Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to create a safer digital ecosystem for its younger population. As concerns over online safety continue to mount, other countries may look to Türkiye’s approach as a potential model for addressing similar issues. Ultimately, the new regulations aim to provide children and teenagers with a more secure online experience, helping to mitigate the risks associated with social media use.
