Cyprus Will Maintain Its Call to Open Turkey’s Archives — Cyprus Mail

The ongoing dispute between Cyprus and Turkey continues to center on the issue of missing persons following the conflicts in the region. The Cypriot government remains steadfast in its demand for Turkey to disclose military archives to help clarify the fate of individuals who went missing during the turmoil. Labour Minister Marinos Mousiouttas emphasized this commitment in a recent statement, underscoring the importance of addressing historical injustices.

The Pursuit of Missing Persons

Minister Mousiouttas made his remarks during a memorial for EOKA fighter Spyros Hadjiakoumis at the Ayia Varvara church in Nicosia. His comments highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the government in excavating sites connected to missing individuals. These efforts have been significantly hampered by consistent opposition from the Turkish military, complicating Cyprus’s quest for closure for the families of the missing. The search for these persons is not merely a bureaucratic endeavor; it symbolizes a deep-rooted need for justice and acknowledgment of the past’s tragedies.

Restarting Settlement Talks

In addition to the issue of missing persons, Minister Mousiouttas discussed the government’s diplomatic efforts to resume settlement negotiations with Turkey. These talks are crucial as they aim to revisit the discussions that stalled in Crans-Montana back in 2017. According to him, it is essential to build on the previously established agreements rather than starting from scratch.

The minister advocated for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that adheres to UN Security Council resolutions. He maintained that any viable solution should exclude the presence of occupation troops and outdated guarantees, alongside the intervention rights of third parties. Despite this clear framework for dialogue, Mousiouttas pointed out that Turkey seems to lack the political will to endorse such a compromise, firmly stating that Cyprus will not entertain a two-state solution.

In summary, Cyprus’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind the missing persons issue and its resolve to engage in constructive dialogue with Turkey remain steadfast. The government recognizes that addressing these historical grievances and restarting negotiations are crucial steps toward achieving long-term peace and stability in the region.
