Turkey’s Erdogan denounces Houthi assaults on Riyadh airport, expresses support for Saudi Arabia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vocally denounced recent Houthi assaults on the main airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. These attacks, which occurred on October 10, resulted in the tragic loss of 12 lives and left hundreds injured. Erdogan’s condemnation came during a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where he expressed sorrow over the incident and reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to stand alongside Saudi Arabia during such crises.

Erdogan’s Condemnation of Houthi Attacks

Erdogan explicitly stated, “We strongly condemn the attacks carried out by the Houthis on King Khalid International Airport, which killed 12 people and injured 309.” He extended heartfelt condolences to the victims, many of whom were performing the Umrah pilgrimage, and he wished a swift recovery to those who were injured. Highlighting Türkiye’s unwavering support, Erdogan remarked, “Türkiye stands with Saudi Arabia and our Saudi brothers and sisters in the face of these attacks that violate law and humanity.” His remarks emphasize Türkiye’s ongoing commitment to regional solidarity and support.

Erdogan called for peace and stability within the region, emphasizing that Türkiye aims to promote dialogue and diplomatic solutions rather than resorting to armed conflict. He pointed out that the conflict zones in the area are widening, with rising tensions noted in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran. In contrast, he explained that Türkiye is increasingly seen as a bastion of stability and peace, asserting its role in resolving disputes through diplomatic means rather than military confrontations.

Importance of Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity

In addressing the regional challenges, Erdogan stressed the importance of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Division and fragmentation only serve the interests of malicious forces that seek to turn our region into a sea of blood,” he warned. His statement underscores Türkiye’s desire to maintain unity and peace in the face of external pressures and internal upheavals.

Erdogan also announced that efforts are in progress to submit the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement—a pact established between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan—to parliament for domestic approval. This agreement, signed on August 7, aims to strengthen collective defense and promote regional cooperation. “We are striving to establish an institutional framework for the agreement,” he noted, highlighting that defense cooperation will adhere to national legislation similar to NATO protocols.

Advocating for Peace in the Region

Rejecting claims that Türkiye operates from a divergent strategic position, Erdogan clarified the nation’s stance on regional issues: “We never view events through an ethnic or sectarian lens. Our goal is to advocate for peace and stability across the region.” He emphasized that Türkiye will continue to pursue peace based on regional ownership, focusing on collaboration and understanding rather than division.

In a recent engagement, Erdogan delivered remarks at TEKNOFEST Southeastern Türkiye in Sanliurfa province. During the event, he celebrated record participation and inaugurated the new Sanliurfa City Hospital, marking a pivotal moment for local development. His address reflects Türkiye’s aspirations not only for regional security but also for socio-economic advancements, showcasing a broader commitment to improving the lives of its citizens.

In conclusion, Erdogan’s strong response to the Houthi attacks serves as a reminder of Türkiye’s position as a cornerstone of stability while advocating for international cooperation and peace in the region.
