Cairo has reported significant insights regarding the adoption of e-commerce among households based on findings from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). This data reveals the extent to which Egyptian families are utilizing online services, indicating a shift in consumer behavior towards digital platforms.
Household E-Commerce Trends
Recent statistics highlight that hotel bookings are leading the way in online service access, with 48.3 percent of households participating in this trend. Following closely are medical services at 40.5 percent, while maintenance services account for 19 percent. Social services reach 15.1 percent, and financial services lag significantly behind at just 1.3 percent. These figures illustrate a growing acceptance of online transactions, particularly in areas that were traditionally reliant on in-person interactions.
Survey Insights and Objectives
CAPMAS conducted a groundbreaking survey that encompassed 16,523 households from various governorates across Egypt. This comprehensive survey was designed to quantitatively assess the current state of e-commerce in the country, examining both the volume of online trade in goods and services as well as payment methods, like credit cards. Moreover, it provides a clearer picture of the challenges faced by consumers in the digital marketplace, aiding policymakers in devising effective solutions.
Internet Usage Among Households
The data reveals that a substantial 81.3 percent of Egyptian households have internet access, while 18.7 percent do not. This high penetration rate underscores the importance of internet connectivity in enabling e-commerce. A staggering 99.4 percent of those online are accessing the internet primarily through smartphones. Only a small fraction, about 0.8 percent, reported using devices owned by someone outside their household for internet access. Additionally, traditional computing devices such as home computers and laptops are utilized by 6.6 percent, and a mere 2.4 percent access the internet via work devices.
Challenges and Future Directions
Despite the positive trends in e-commerce utilization, the survey also uncovers barriers that can impede growth in this sector. Understanding these challenges is vital for formulating proactive policies aimed at fostering a more robust digital economy. Addressing issues such as cybersecurity concerns and payment system inefficiencies can greatly enhance user confidence and facilitate greater e-commerce participation among households.
In summary, the findings from CAPMAS not only shed light on the current state of e-commerce in Egypt but also emphasize the necessity for continued support and improvements in internet access and digital payments. By harnessing these insights, stakeholders can better understand consumer needs and work towards a thriving digital marketplace that caters to the evolving demands of the Egyptian population.
